Question by Dude12: Why are office computers significantly slower than home computers? My office computer, which my company just bought a year ago, is very slow at times. But my home computer, which I purchased over 2 years ago, is still VERY fast. It almost never lags when running programs or surfing the internet. I don't get it. Office computers are purchased in bulk at a discount, which usually means that they have minimum specs required to run. On top of that, your IT department probably has loaded additional security software and used system policies to prevent attacks from viruses and what-not. So unless your job requires that you have a full-fledged workstation, you'll end up using the same kind of computer everyone else does.

I'd guess it's because most companies don't necessarily buy the latest and/or fastest computers. They look more for reliability, stability, and security than they do for all-out performance. Also, they tend to buy enough computer for the job, as opposed to computer enthusiasts (like us) who buy the best we can afford. I don't need a Core i7 processor, 12 GB of DDR3 RAM, and two NVIDIA GTX 460 video cards on my office computer in order to use Microsoft Office and other business-related apps, but I'm glad I have 'em at home. :-)

bear in mind that at the office you need the computer as a tool to do your job. From the IT Department's point of view, if you need to edit excel files all day long, you won't be needing quad processor hardware and super-sonic hardware accelerated graphics... you'll get the cheapest equipment they have on stock(well, it's just an example) on the other hand, at home, you will probably pay more money for something that you'll use for years from now on, for movies, games, rich internet content etc.
