Clean installs (formatting) and reinstalling your operating system are always the best ways to clear up issues and restore your computer to what it once was. Be sure to have an installer for windows (definitely have the key) and save your favorites, important files, and drivers. Google "re-format computer" or something to that affect, many guides can help. Sounds like your comp has just become bogged down over the years. Otherwise, uninstall everything you don't need. Download jkdefrag (and run it many times), Ccleaner, and free virus/anti virus such as Avast! and SuperAntiSpyware.
