The cheapest easiest way to improve the performance of any computer is to upgrade the memory or RAM of the computer. The amount of RAM, or random access memory, affects a computers ability to do immediate tasks, like rotating an image in a program like Photoshop.

More and more, computer retailers are realizing that this is the one upgrade that the casual computer user will actual do. A desktop model of any computer line boasts the fact that almost any component can be upgraded, from memory to processor. The fact is that most towers are not upgraded. Laptops and all-in-ones, like the Apple iMac, are geared towards this fact, with most components being more difficult to switch but computer memory being very simple to add.

The first thing you will want to figure out is how much memory you will need. If you are doing anything with video, it is wise to simply find out how much memory your computer can take and put in the maximum amount.

Most computer memory retailers will be able to easily tell you this amount when you supply your computer model. If you are doing image editing, find your average file size and make sure you have at least three times as much computer memory available.

While computer retailers can supply additional memory at the time of a computers purchase, it is generally overpriced. Visit on-line retailers and local stores to find a third party brand that will generally be a third of the price of name brand computer memory.

With your new RAM in hand, read your computer manual on how to open up your computer to install the memory. Newer computers, like the iMac, have a very easy to open panel at the bottom of the computer that can be accessed by putting the computer face down on a flat service.

A key point here is once you take the memory out of the the protective package, be sure to avoid any static charge which will ruin your memory.

When you talk about memory upgrade that is typically the RAM - I just purchased 2 GB for our kitchen computer at $ 70. Graphics updates require new cards as they are not design to have additional memory added to them.

You can get gigs of ram on ebay new for cheap but you need to buy the right one that fits. A video card upgrade might be needed but make sure you get the right one for your pc and game or it won't work. Again, ebay has good prices but make sure the seller has a good rating.

"Depends" isn't very helpful, but it is accurate. Your computer could need as little as a $ 50 memory upgrade, or it might need a complete replacement of the processor, memory, motherboard, graphics card and power supply (i.e. a mostly new computer). Anywhere from about $ 60 on up to a little over $ 600. In general, you need about 3GB of RAM. It will cost you about $ 60 to upgrade to 3GB or more, if your motherboard will allow it. But that's just RAM. You might need new motherboard (another 70 bux), new video card (70 bux), new CPU (100 or more), new power supply (50 bux minimum for something decent) etc. You want to end up with (for sims 3) minimum 2.6GHz CPU clock speed, HD 4670 or better video card, 3GB or more of RAM... So look at what you've got, and see what it will cost to buy what you need. Just keep in mind that any significant upgrade (CPU, video card) will likely require a new power supply, as well.

RAM can be upgraded -- the average home PC can be upgraded to roughly 4 GB or more of RAM. If you're running under 2 gigabytes of memory, you should upgrade. If you have exactly 2 GB's, you may or may not have upgrade, depending on how heavy your application usage is. If you intend to multitask lots of apps, run Photoshop etc., 4 GB is preferable. Graphics -- very important when it comes to playing games. Generally a sub $ 100 dollar card is sufficient to play most casual games. I suggest looking at the Radeon 4670, it's not a powerful card, but it is enough to satiate casual gaming needs. GB's -- I think you are referring to hard drive capacity. Again, it's pretty easy to upgrade your hard drive -- simply buy another one and stick it in. However it's even easier to just buy yourself an external USB or E-SATA drive, that you plug in whenever you need it.
