The "1000W" means the maximum amount of *output* power that the power supply can provide. It has nothing to do with the amount of input power that it draws, except that a power supply must draw in at least as much power as it puts out. Typically, power supplies are around 80% efficient. This means the power supply draws about 25% more power than the computer requires. So if the computer requires 150 watts, the power supply will draw around 190 watts from the power line. Power supplies vary in efficiency, and you can check the specification for each power supply to find its rated efficiency. All other things being equal, power supplies are generally designed for peak efficiency at 50% load, however, this varies from power supply to power supply. A larger power supply of comparable quality will not use significantly more power than a smaller power supply. Look for power supplies with 80PLUS ratings.

A Computer power supply is a switching supply and will supply (and draw) power on demand. Think of a Monster AMP for a car stereo. You may have 1,000 watt subwoofer amp , but until you turn it way up or hit a REAL LOW note, the amp is not using much power (amps). When a computer starts, all the devices are tested and there is a "surge" for a few seconds. That surge can draw up to 500 - 600 watts but it will taper off unless your playing a game and burning a CD and using all the power of the computer. The powersupply will only put out the power needed, and therefore will only "draw" about 25% or so more than the output. So the "Bigger" power supply will not create a bigger electric bill. It wont draw more than the 600W but will have reserve capacity if needed.

no it powers what the computer needs alot of the connectors wont be being used so it will be unable to complete the circuits and so will not output 1000watts remember just cause its 1000watts means thats the maximum each connector can only output so much. e.g 8 pin cpu can output 140watts, 6 pin pci e connector can output 75 watts, etc

1000W supply means it can provide max of 1000Watts. Just a computer will run fine on a 450W supply , If u a powerful Graphics card or Sound card u will need a 600W supply max 750. When u use a 1000w supply for a system that needs less it will not affect it in any way , it will just provide the required power that's all.
