Regardless of what place you are in your computer career, the question always comes up, "Which computer careers are in demand?", or "Which computer career path will earn the most money?". When considering a computer career path, it's important to understand not what career or skill has the highest demand, but what you can provide to employers to make yourself the most valuable.

Nearly any computer career or path can be lucrative, I'd argue from personal experience and research that pretty much all career tracks have potential to earn a salary that most would be jealous of. The secret in building a successful career is in focusing on what employers need and want. Don't focus on certifications, or degrees, or anything else that everyone else is pursuing. There are no "hot" markets. There are no skills that are "in demand". If you want to become successful, follow these 3 simple rules:

1. Focus on hands-on skills. No matter what career track or technology you choose to pursue, broaden your knowledge as much as possible. Studying the Windows Vista operating system? Learn nearly every feature within it. Encryption, built-in troubleshooting tools, tools for performing unattended installs, the works. Don't feel the need to master them, but instead learn the basics of what each one does, when to use it, and where you can go to learn more information if needed.

2. Generalize. Research new technologies and constantly push yourself to find new ways to solve old problems. Learn to be the problem solver, the person that thinks "outside the box" and can come up with answers that other people can't.

3. Be self-sufficient. Learn how to use the Internet to find solutions that others can't find. Use forums, search for error strings that applications provide, and when learning new technologies, take the time to test them, break them, and understand what problems you might see if a service is turned off, or a server is no longer avail able.
