Antique Desks For Sale and The Electronics Deal-Killer [aboutcomputer99.blogspot.com]

Question by : I have a year and a half old dell desk top that i hardly ever use, should i sell it? The reason i hardly ever use it is because I have a macbook that I take to school with me. I'm thinking about selling my desktop because i hardly ever turn it on, and when i do turn it on, its usually just to check for updates or load documents onto it. And its kinda nice having a non-mac computer sitting around just in case i need it. It was a $ 1000 computer that i paid $ 600 for [it was on sale]. Best answer for I have a year and a half old dell desk top that i hardly ever use, should i sell it?:

Answer by S
You like it keep it. I am the same way. Have the first computer we bought. Slow and XP. Keep it off line. Play pinball and cards. Computers depreciate, you may not recover your investment. Or worse be heckled to sell it cheap. Hope it helps.

One of the greatest sub-niches of antique collecting is antique desks. There's nothing for me like finding a great source of antique desks for sale. Antique tables are great, but when you find antique desks for sale you really have be an investigator and check out all of the moving pieces, including doors, roll tops, and drawers.

There's nothing quite like discovering a great find that's still in wonderful condition and the solid craftsmanship actually allows you to work with the piece as they did a century ago instead of just looking at it. These can make the nicest of additions to your home, as there's nothing quite like the excellent woodworking ability that went into the classic styles of yesteryear.

Veteran antique desk collectors know that finding antique desks for sale isn't enough when there's a certain specimen you're looking for, such as the secretary desk. They may have some great items, but you may be in search of that unique breed of desk with the hidden workspace that could be contained by the board that closes it off. Even laymen can recognize that sight of the angled board sitting in the corner. Those tall items are the secretary which, for many, is the find of all antique desks for sale.

These days, it's not uncommon to find a number of smaller reproductions. These are often easy to spot because they can be disassembled, whereas the real deal was just one piece. Indeed, you may have been able to get the drawers out, but the overall unit was just one piece.

Another one of the best antique desks for sale would have to be a rolltop desk. These are similar to the secretary desks, since they have the nifty hidden crevices and storage places, but the rolltop had the great feature of having the lid simply slide up into the unit itself. It was great because you could leave your work where you left off, slide down the rolltop to close shop, and walk away leaving a nice appearance and yet keep your papers pr ivate. The secretary, of course, required you to move everything before it was closed.

When shopping for antique desks for sale, you of course have other options besides the rolltop and secretary. You've likely seen the big wooden desks that have the curved or just plain flat fronts. These were the ornate pieces that had great engravings or carvings to make them so beautiful. They were actually prettier than the other two types. Not surprisingly, they are generally more expensive as well. The best bet is to try to locate a number of sources for antique desks for sale. By doing so, you can look at a wide array of options and decide exactly what fits you best.

When shopping for antique desks for sale, you want to bear in mind a thing or two that will help. First, note that people weren't concerned with electricity a hundred years ago, and they certainly weren't thinking about accommodating computer equipment. By contrast, it seems like the desks of today are built with housing a computer in mind. The antiques were geared towards manual labor on a desktop. If you intend to put your antique to work for you, just note you could hit a snag or two accordingly, and may discover your perfect find is no longer such a buy. But if you're planning to use it, you're likely not looking for the top of the line antique either. Something practical on a budget may do just fine, and you could consider slight modifications to weave power cords where needed.
