best to look for a used one, if ou're on a budget. You can get a decent computer for a couple hundred dollars on craigslist, just meet them in person don't ship or use paypal

Answer by C-Man
You just need one for everyday use? Used from Craigslist/Ebay would be cheapest, but you'd have to know the person you're buying from or deal with a seller you trust. New? Best Buy actually has some good deals, like this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+Inspiron+Desktop+-+4GB+Memory+-+500GB+Hard+Drive/4673045.p?id=1218505323144&skuId=4673045

There's some great deals on new computers from big box stores. The latest Staples flyer has a Compaq for $ 300. Also, check out the mail-order sources like Dell and Gateway for specials. Used computers tend to be overpriced for the performance you get. But, sometimes there are worthwhile deals on refurbished off-lease computers, and they may be more solidly built.

When you are in the market for cheap computers it is easy to get lost in all the specifications and jargon that typically accompany most computer ads. Well as they say, knowledge is power and the more you know about the parts of your computer the better.

Common Terms

Computers come in many configurations however; they all have some basic parts. Below is a list of the essentials of a computer.

• Hard Drive - This is the primary storage device on a computer. This is where all the information such as operating system and programs will be saved. The size of the hard drive is extremely important, as is the speed at which it turns. Size is measured in gigabytes and speed as revolutions per minute or rpm.

• Mother Board - This is the main circuit board for the computer, kind of the brains of the operation if you will. Must be compatible with all other internal parts.

• CPU - Central Processing Unit, this is the part respon sible for executing programs. This component has a lot to do with the speed of the computers operations. Size does matter when it comes to this part, they are measured in GHz and a good size today is 3.1 GHz.

• Tower - This is simply the case that holds all the components together.

• CD/DVD drive - This is the component that you place CDS or DVDS in to "read" them. This is the one part that you will physically interact with the most. High-end computers can now be equipped with Blue-Ray burners, in place of CD drives.

These are the bare basic parts of a computer, there are many more internal parts you can purchase but these are a must for all computers.

Buy or Build?

Cheap computers can be bought or built. However to build cheap computers you are going to need the technical knowledge to coordinate the parts so that they are all compatible and put the thing together. If you have this ability then you are indeed in luck becaus e you can build your own computer much cheaper than you can buy it.

On the other hand, if you are like many people today you cannot tell a CPU from a USB and would have very little luck building your own. That is okay to you can still find cheap computers to choose from.

One great way to browse cheap computers is to go to the manufacturer's web site. Dell, IBM and Hewlett Packard all carry what is called refurbished computers. These are units that have been returned to them, reworked, tested and placed for sale.

This is perhaps the best way to purchase cheap computers, as opposed to buying one used from the paper or a person you barely know. The technicians will have thoroughly checked these units out and replaced any faulty parts, whereas an individual will simply sell you their problems! Moreover, even though these units are cheap computers they will still cover them with a limited warranty.
