its difficult to get an honest big time consumer report since some companies pay people to feature and advertise their products. However there are reputable sites like CNET,, raymond cc blog to name a few where you can read the COMMENTS and REVIEWS of users. Also ther are independent gruoups if I may say that records performances based on the standard test which AV programs are willingly subjected into. an example would be AV COMPARATIVES. (google search it) The 1st quarter results will be relased by June, as they say. TOPS in the list are NORTON and Kaspersky respectively. However in my opinion this is kinda "passe" already since a lot of changes have gone for the last few months. Viruses evolving, products improving. So this is just a guide since one product will get excellent reviews for a particular period but will be overtaken by another company after some adjustments on the next period etc. etc.

The Best Free Security protection is: Comodo Pro (firewall) and AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition More user friendly option: ZoneAlarm (firewall) simpler to use and requires less setting up then Comodo Pro All available from download.com I recently removed my McAfee firewall and installed Comodo Pro, its the best firewall I've ever used and comes top in leaktests (see below) if after installing Comodo you get too many warnings turn the defence + setting to clean computer or off, its has nothing to do with the firewall part of Comodo it simply monitors system changes. http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php Would also recommend that you use a safer browser like Mozilla Firefox. http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/ Download additional anti-spyware software my favourite is Malwarebytes.. You can run any realtime anti-spyware program with an anti-virus program and it will not conflict. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware works well with AVG, provided that you get the free version, which doesn't have real-time protection. There's a chance of bad interactions with AVG if MBAM's real-time protection is turned on. Install the free version, then update it and run scans occasionally. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php Install the McAfee SiteAdvisor add-on - when searching for something using yahoo, google or msn, it displays either a green tick (safe site), yellow exclamation mark (use with care) or a red cross (dangerous site) next to every result. http://www.siteadvisor.com/ Always keep your Windows, web browser and Java software up to date - frequent patches are released to plug security holes. (Don't use AntiVir, some people recommended Avira AntiVir to me so I removed AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition and installed AntiVir but I could not get it to update, the forums are full of people having the same problem) Hope That Helps!
