Every computer user should be familiar with defragmentation. If you are unfamiliar with this term, your computer may be suffering needlessly. Defragmentation helps you sort out the files and programs that might have gone missing or misplaced while you were using your computer. Doing defragmentation once every few months is good and it acts as mini computer maintenance for you too. Fortunately, defragmentation is free. It can be easily found on most Windows based computers. All computer geeks know what Random Access Memory (RAM) is. RAM is an important component in the computer that helps to store your main data, so that they can be accessed immediately. It is important that you perform a RAM upgrade once every few years. Newer programs and applications require more memory to run. Your RAM should be one of the main components you upgrade to keep pace with increasing software requirements. A small RAM has limited space and chances are you are going to have t roubles trying to run certain applications. This is also the reason why having a sizeable RAM will help to keep your PC's speed on par newer PCs. The only disadvantage with this method is that good RAM can be costly. But it's definitely worth the money! The 'registry' is an unfamiliar term with most computer users. The registry is also another part of the PC, however, unlike RAM, the registry is an intangible piece of software. The registry stores all your personal login details and software settings. But the problem with the registry is that it functions like a one-way street; information can be stored, but cannot be deleted. Hence, files in the registry, also known as the registry keys, will get accumulated over time. Over the years, the registry keys will be overwritten many times, thus increasing the chances of the keys going missing or getting corrupted. If this happens, your computer will take a much longer time to open applications. Your computer will need to navigate a maze of redundant and corrupted keys, before getting to the right one. Remember to do regular clean ups on your registry. This can be done by getting a registry cleaner such as RegCure. You can also do this manually, but it is not advised.

It's hard to tell if you don't include any details about your PC but I would add more RAM its one of the cheapest and easiest ways to improve performance.

first of all, reduce ur FEW anti viruses to just one anti virus, and also uninstall all unwanted software from ur hard disk.

only use one active antivirus at a time choose one that is active and maybe another that runs manually you probably have too much RAM being used and programs interfering with each other

You need to clean up your registry and do routine maintenance such as defragging and removing broken short-cuts. The easiest way to do this is to install a programme like "tune-up utilities" that will do all these jobs automatically. This particular programme is very good (I use it on all my computers) but it does have to be bought. There are free programmes available but as I haven't tried them all I couldn't recommend them. It is not a good idea to have more than one anti-virus programme installed. Apart from slowing down your computer, one programme may prevent another from working properly by disabling some of its functions or by mistaking definitions as viruses and removing them. Once you have sorted out the registry and installed a good tune-up utility, the best way to improve your speed is to make sure that you have the maximum RAM that your computer supports installed. Visit the crucial memory website for a tool to scan your computer and suggest memory upgrades.

Your PC is constantly reading and writing to a registry while you work, or while you are playing games, on it. This all happens in the background without you even noticing. When your PC was new, this was no problem, but the longer you have your computer, the more programs you install on it and the more the registry becomes bloated and damaged. This is the reason that your PC is running slower and might crash all of a sudden without warning. Your computer needs to work hard to go through all the registry bloat, or it might simply crash if it comes across a faulty entry.A registry cleaner will scan and repair your registry.Frequent maintenance using a registry cleaner is crucial to make your computer go faster.I should like to commend Registry Easy http://best-way-to-improve-pc-performance.com to you !

An antivirus program need RAM (memory) to operate so having more than ONE antivirus program running on your computer means having a slow computer. In order to protect your computer from viruses and other type of threats the antivirus software uses an on-access scanning engine that scans each file you open...so the computer reacts slower to your commands. A good antivirus program is Kaspersky Antivirus...but I recommend using it only if you have at least a mid-range configuration( mid-range for 2009). http://www.kaspersky.com/trials If your computer is older then ...you can use NOD32 or Avast Antivirus(for Pentium 2s 3s, older P4s..). Right click on ' My Computer '->Properties->Advanced Tab->First Settings button->Select Adjust for best performance and scroll down the list to select the last three options after everything has been deactivated. Click Apply,OK and OK again. Now: Start->Run-> type ' msconfig ' and hit enter. Click on the Startup tab and it should appear the list of the programs that are automatically started when your computer reaches the desktop...uncheck the ones you would like to disable and click Apply. It will ask you if you want to restart and select not to do it now. Go to: Start->Run and type ' services.msc '. In the list which should open..search for : Error Reporting Service -> right click on it select Properties-> Startup type = Disabled and click Apply and OK. Help and Support(if you don't use Windows' help program you should Disable it too) If you don NOT update your Windows: Disable Security Center service and the Automatic Updates one too. Disabling services means freeing up memory but disable the wrong service and you will see yourself in the middle of some big trouble when you may want to use the webcam , printer or anything else. Do NOT disable services if you DON'T know what they are used for!. The ones I have told you to disable are SAFE to disable. Try to perform a defragmentation on your hard disk drive...especially on your Windows partition since it can improve your boot speed. Make sure your PC is spyware/adware free...use an Anti-Spyware program such as Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

theres 2 programs i love to use to speed up any computer. Ccleaner & Smart Defrag Ccleaner will clean up your computer of junk files that will slow down your computer. And deletes all the files that you or your computer will never use. plus it also has a registry cleaner so your registry can be free of errors and prevent computer problems. Smart defrag is awesome too! It fixes fragmented files and it intelligently organizes your drives and files so your computer can be more stable and be at maximum performance with speed and responses.
