Look amazing deals in TigerDirect.com, they have really good discounts in custom made computers. This is not an advertisign for TigerDirect, Im telling you this because I buy from this provider a lot, they always have great deals.

Th best bang for your buck will be custom builds from smaller computer shops, not big brand names like Dell, Sony or HP. Of the big brands, Gateway is usually the least expensive. If you build computers yourself, Tigerdirect.com and Newegg.com have great prices. If not, maybe you know someone who'll be willing to build a system for you? Or just check with a local computer shop and get a quote for a generic system. Excel & Word aren't cheap... Microsoft Office is a $ 300 program unless you qualify for the student/teacher edition at $ 150. The trial version that comes preinstalled on name-brand computers stops working after 60 days- you can only keep using after that by paying Microsoft the full price! I recommend download the OpenOffice suite- it includes full-featured replacements for word, excel etc. and it's free! I've included the link below. Here's one computer seller with decent online prices (not quite as low as buying parts from Newegg, though)

I would recommend Carbonfrost Systems. They use all name brand parts, for the price they give best computer and it has a 3 year warranty. If Dell is selling it for $ 900 CFS beats them in quality and price which is awesome. One of buddies got a $ 500/$ 600 computer from CFS and its really good for playing games and doing online stuff. It dual core, 3 gigs ram, decent video card, monitor, vista or xp and tons of space. Very good system. Their contact info is support@carbonfrost.com

I wholeheartedly agree with Proto... I've always bought custom built systems (except for my first Packard Bell ) and contrary to popular belief, custom built is decidedly cheaper in the long run. You get better components and better chance of easily upgrading later on, than if you buy stock. OpenOffice is a reliable way to go. We have it installed alongside MSOffice on all our computers on campus. OpenOffice has all the same programs as MSOffice. Good luck.

I have a great recommendation for you, and I stand by it solidly! My Sister, Brother-in-Law, Father-in-Law, and myself, all have Emachines! Mine is the newest. It is a W3619 as is my sisters. I bought it 9 months ago for $ 458.00. The only thing I did so far is add two sticks of 1GB RAM. It only came with 512 installed which is just about enough to run Vista and not much more. You can get an emachine that all ready has enough RAM installed too. This one came with a 120GB HDD, which would be plenty for what you plan on using it for. Emachines are manufactured and backed up by Gateway. They have excellent phone, email, and live chat support. I love my emachines, which I have affectionately named, "Miss Emmy". Just about any desktop you buy now is going to have Vista installed on it. Contrary to die hard XP users opinions, Vista has come a long way towards repairing the compadability issue it once had. Good luck! And remember this, you do not have to spend a crap load of dough to get a really good desktop. As long as you get a unit with a minimum 120GB HDD and 1GB Ram, you will have plenty. You can always add RAM later. In case you ever do want to increase your RAM,I always get mine at 4allmemory.com.
