Also, keyboards with buttons and knobs that allow you to synthesize other sounds that can be added to your musical creation.

With the growth of technology, music and the production of music is forced to move ahead with its own technological advances. The good programs I know of people using are Sonar and Protools. Those are used in the studio I work in.
