It is better to buy them online because you have more of a variety to choose from and you can customize the computer to your likings. Dell is the best brand. Hey there, I will say this once, and only once: Dell, Dell, Dell, and Dell. OK. That was four times, but for good reason. I would never, or ever go with another brand of computer. Simple as that. I've been using Dell for well over 10 years now. That goes for all of our servers, as well as desktop systems, and even my home systems have ALL been Dell's. Get a Dell. It is customized for you, and built when you order it. It is not some mass-made system that gets shipped out to a dozen different stores that are just cookie-cutter systems. Dell makes yours when you order it. You know it's not just one of a hundred out there, just waiting for something to go wrong with it. I have worked with Dell, HP/Compaq, Toshiba, Gateway, and Sony systems. Dell and Sony have by far been some of the best systems out there. I have returned for repairs all of the other ones more times than I would like to remember.

You can get an awesome bargain on-line and at a retail store. At a retail store, you get INSTANT gratification, instead of waiting for the UPS guy to show up. But consider the RETURN policy. Staples is an awesome store. While they have bargains on-line and by phone, I prefer to WALK in the store, see what I want, BUY it and go home. I might save money buy phone or on-line, but returning is much more difficult. So I chose to buy in the store. Staples has a NO QUESTIONS 14 day return policy, so it's really EASY. In fact, that's what the EASY button is all about. Now a store like Staples is reluctant to carry CRAP, since they really don't want it back. Some stores favor the vendor, so they charge you a 15% restocking fee if you have to take it back. In fact, they resist taking it back so much, that they convince you that they could repair it, or somehow make it right. I really dislike that kind of store, so I never go there. These stores also carry every off-beat brand imaginable, since they don't really support the CUSTOMER, who makes them RICH. Buying on-line can turn into a real nightmare. But good companies do work out OK. I recently ordered a DELL on-line, but after waiting a week for it to be delivered, I simply went to STAPLES and bought another brand. I can't say it's always less expensive buying online, but definitely less expensive than the stores you've listed. Dell and HP/Compaq have good discounts on some low end systems. Apple iMac is good system also if you have no OS preference. Alienware is a good source if you are into gaming systems. They were bought out recently by Dell. You can also check out the ads in the PC mags, they offer good prices on mail order. Without knowing what your needs are I can't recommend a specific configuration for you.
