If your dad has the tools and talent to restructure the desk, ask him if he would help you build a vanity. The desk you are talking about is made of low grade particle board. If you get a few years out of it you'd be doing good. A project with your father is something that lasts forever (even after the vanity is gone, the memories remain). This is a relatively easy project to build. Good luck
