First up, scratch that idea about the garbage. Just because the computer manufacturers and their corporate overlords don't give a crap about the planet, doesn't mean that we have to follow suit. I must have brought several hundred computers home over the last 7 years because I hate waste. Unfortunately, there are only so many spare parts that one person can use and only so many friends that are interested in used parts but there is one other possibility. This is what I've done to keep the inventory maintained although, I still have quite a bit ... it is still not in the landfill. I can only assume that you know quite a bit about computers and so, I recommend rebuilding systems to be sold as starter computers. You definitely need some good patience because not every component will be compatible with the next and so it can be time consuming. If you are unsure, look it up on the WEB. The thing is that you gain the experience and knowledge, may possibly help someone who normally wouldn't be able to afford a computer and help save the planet as well. I normally sell a desktop Pentium III (fully configured), monitor, keyboard and mouse plus minimal technical support for a hundred dollars. You can offer to install their operating system and software plus give a few tutorials for a small fee as well. The important thing is to specify the sale - "As Is" and only offer a guarantee that you are willing to cover. The tech support also should be limited and on specific issues because, while a pro may get $ 50 bucks an hour, you may not and you may find yourself at their home for ten hours with no pay I normally say, if something breaks or malfunctions during the first few months, I'll repair it or replace it for free.
