Does your server computer gradually run slowly? Almost every administrator encounters this problem. They try many solutions, but the results are still far from satisfactory. Reasons are various, but the common one is low disk space in system partition.
As hard disk partitions are allocated in fixed content, it is not available for users to enlarge size in Windows Disk Management under server 2000 and 2003. The solution seems deleting some data on it, or transferring some files to other non-system partitions. But the disadvantage is time-consuming, especially when move large amount of files and data. Besides, it is easy to affect registry, cause boot failure of applications.
When it turns to Windows Server 2008, the solution becomes better. The Disk Management allows the user to extend NTFS system partition. But the inconvenience is that the user needs to reserve some un-allocated space right after system partition, if not, the user needs to delete partition beside it to release space for extending.
Though Windows build-in Disk Management under Windows 2008 improved much, the problem is still entirely resolved as hard disk volume is fixed but the amount of data is not. Then dynamic disks became popular. It is an IT technology that combines more than two physical disks into one, function as one hard disc. This can vastly relieve space limitation on hard disc. The user only needs to convert basic disc into dynamic disk and add physical disks when free space is insufficient.
Furthermore, Server computer users can use third-party software to resize system partition. It will cost less time and efforts. But as no software can 100% guarantee data security, it is suggested to back up data first.

Best answer for How do you replace a computer that functions as the server for the network?:

If you're going to be replacing it with a device of same HDD size, why not create a clone of the HDD and simply ghost it into the new machine? Other than that, you're going to need some kind of backup. :| Good luck to you.
