Question by : How I can recover data from my Lacie Rugged 1TB HDD when it is not been detected by any computer ? Its not been a year when I bought a new Lacie rugged 1TB HDD and now suddenly its not been detected by my computer (Mac & PC). When I connect it, I can feel movement by my hand on the drive. I always kept it in my safe locker as its my main backup HDD. No External damage. I'd hate to say it, but you may be out of luck. It sounds like it crashed. You can take it to bestbuy and they will check and see if they can get it to connect for you. But this recently happened to me, and you may be required to send it off and have a professional company extract the data. That can cost over 500 dollars. Otherwise, if you are extremely talented, you can buy the exact same hard drive online, and try to place the platters in the new harddrive. It is extremely complicated and may not work. But it could be a software problem as well, so go to best buy and see what they can do, it's free to see if it will connect, they may charge you for the data, but its cheaper than the alternatives.

Try to exclude any problem with the link between the hdd and the computer: (don't use an usb-switch for instance and replace the cable if possible, or just reconnect it) There might be something wrong with the wiring insi de the hdd (the connection between the actuall hdd and the outside of the hdd-casing) in which case the actuall hdd might still be operational but wether it's usable would depend on what the actual hdd looks like (it has to be a "normal" hdd with a normal formfactor) and getting to it would require demolishing the casing which would be a point of no return, so do that as a last resort only and if you think you are handy enough to do it. Lacie has a site (lacie.com) so try to find support there or call lacie. If i had that problem i'd like to know general advice from lacie and if the hdd is removable from the casing (they wil probably advice against it, and point out it wil void the warranty, but i would like to only know if it's possible and if the actuall hdd is usable as a "normal" hdd and what formfactor if has.) There are different levels of detection: - the bios can detect the hdd - windows can detect the hdd (displaying it in the inbuilt partition-manager, or maybe it wil be an unrecognized device?.. are there any unrecognized devices in the device-management when the hdd is connected?) - a filemanager can detect a workable partition on the hdd It may be significant to know where it actually goes wrong. It's always best to give as much and detailed info as possible when looking for help so take a look at this before contacting lacie. Try a different windows computer or reinstall windows. If the hdd doesn't work on your pc and your mac then that's indeed pointing at a problem with the hdd (or it's wiring and powersupply) but i would go for some extra confirmation by for instance using a newly installed windows. Sometimes usb hdd's just fail to get recognized temporarily. Often the simple act of reconnecting or rebooting or re-installing or a combination of those can make it work again, so try out some things. If you realy want to keep your data safe keep it stored at 2 places. Hdd's can always fail. It doesn't happen often (i never had one of my hdd's fail) but one should be prepaired for it.
