when you download it, right click the application icon and press properties, then compatibility and change it to run as windows xp, usually works for me in windows 7.

If it's a DOS game try using DOSBox http://www.dosbox.com/ Otherwise, as mentioned in the previous section, go into properties and run it in compatibility mode for the OS it was designed for. Here is a new gaming computer with Win XP on it, just for such purposes. Usually you can't run older games designed for XP and older on Win7 unless there was some patch or crack for them .
