When friends of mine are about to buy a computer they often ask which brand is best. In my opinion you shouldn't really shop by brand, but by individual product. The reason I say this is because if you read computer magazines, no brand receives consistent high reviews. Name any make of computer and you will be able to dig up a bad review of one of its products.

The best places to look for reviews are online. There are four computer magazines that have lists of there recommended products. These are:

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/alist/

http://www.computerbuyer.co.uk - click "Best Buys" on left hand column

This is a very valuable resource that is a really quick way to find excellent products. I have just one word of warning - make sure the review is up to date. Sometimes the products listed were reviewed are as much as a year ago. In computer terms this is a long time, so in this instance you may want to ta ke it with a pinch of salt.

Before buying anything I always try and get at least two independent reviews. I don't count reviews made by consumers because they are often biased by brand loyalty. Google isn't that great at finding these, so instead just go straight to magazine websites like http://www.pcworld.com, or http://www.pcmag.com.

Once I have a shortlist of possible candidates, I go and see the product in a real life store. That way I can see how it looks, check the level of quality, and generally get a feel for using the device. I wouldn't buy the product in the store unless it is had a massive reduction in price. If you go online, you can almost always get it delivered to your doorstep for less money.

Here are some of my favourite online computer stores in the UK:-

ebuyer.com - very low prices, but the customer service is expensive to call

dabs.com - average price, but fast delivery and great customer service

scan.co.uk - good pric es, excellent range of computer products
