"My Computer is Slow" is a common complaint of many computer users. There are several things that can be done to remedy a slow computer and one of the easiest is to learn how to defrag your computer.
Defrag sounds like a weird term but let's see what defrag means.
When you surf the internet, download programs, files, videos, photos etc, they get stored on your hard drive but in no particular order. They can be scattered all over your hard drive in multiple places so that when your computer tries to locate them it may take a bit of time to find the files and this slows your computer down. You can see that if this goes on for any length of time that it can become cumbersome for your computer and a real pain when it goes slow.
A term for this is fragmentation. If something is fragmented, it means it is in pieces or not in one piece. Think of a book with the pages torn out and put in the wrong order. The process of defragging your computer helps to put the pieces (pages) back in order, making it easier and faster for your computer to locate the files. This is called defragmentation.
How to Defrag Computer: What do you need?
A large number of computer users use a Microsoft operating system. There is a built in defrag program with the Microsoft operating system which is great for most users.
For those folks who use their computers a great deal and depend on a large amount of RAM and 'feel the need for speed', getting a third party defragging program may be more suitable. But for most people the built in program with Microsoft is fine. Also, if you have an antivirus/security program loaded on your computer, it may also include defragging and disc cleaning as part of the program.
How to Defrag Computer: The Steps
These steps are for those folks who have a Microsoft operating system.
1. Go to the 'Start' button, bottom left on your computer
2. Go to 'Control Panel'
3. Go to 'Performance and Maintenance'
4. Go to 'Rearrange items on your hard disc to make them run faster'
5. Click on 'Analyze'
6. The program will analyze your disc to determine whether or not your disc needs defragging.
7. If it comes back with a report that indicates you should defrag, simply click 'Defragment' and let it do its job.
You can minimize the window and continue working on your computer while it does this, just keep in mind that your computer may perform more slowly while this is happening.
How to Defrag Computer: How does it work?
Quite simply, your defragging program goes through your computer files and looks for the ones that are out of order, fragmented and then puts them in a more appropriate position.
How to Defrag Computer: How often should defragging be done?
There is no reason not to defrag your computer often. It won't cause any problems even if you did it every day. But, think about analyzing your disc once a week, particularly if you use your computer a lot.
If you are an occasional user then once a month would be fine. It's better to stay ahead of the game rather than waiting for things to slow down.
Now that you know how to defrag your computer, you won't be saying 'my computer is slow' any more.
