I have XP Professional, I think its the bomb. I agree with you about vista, it's not very user friendly. I don't have that much experience with it though. peace, mavin

Anything that isn't Windows is a sure bet, unless you're into gaming a lot, in which case XP would probably be a good choice (perhaps dual-booting with XP for games and, say, Ubuntu for everything else). You're not alone in hating Vista, that's for sure, and the more people know why, the better.

well since vista isn't a choice, (and why should it be? it STINKS!) the question is are you a gamer? Do you use your computer to play the latest games on the shelf at best buy or wherever? then you need windows xp. If not, give ubuntu a shot. Ubuntu blows vista, and xp for that matter away, in my opinion. You can still play games with ubuntu, just different games and not as many. As for the OS, it is leaps and bounds better than windows.

I liked Windows XP, Then I tyred Windows Vista, .....Now I Love XP!!! I'd go with XP Pro or XP Media Centre Edition, unless you want DX10 then you may have to put up with Vista, or do a Dual Boot.

If you use windows software then windows should be your choice (since windows software don't work on other platforms but software made for Linux works on windows). If you don't, then go with Linux.

XP Professional is the best out there right now. XP Home is ok, just not nearly as much control over the computer. Anything prior to XP kinda sucks Vista sucks Linux is ok, but limited software for it.

Well i would say Ubuntu Linux or XP. Vista is slow as crap and its really not that good. XP is awesome and if you like to customize things then Ubuntu is the place to go, do some research on Ubuntu and hopefully you would find yourself installing it hehe.

I'm a gamer so I recommend Vista. 2 of my computers are massive gamers, one with XP and one with Vista. My XP rig's gathering dust. XP and DirectX 9 are yesterdays news in gaming. I build sell and repair computers and I haven't sold an XP gaming rig in 6 months. They all want Vista and DX10. Anyone who says to use XP for gaming obviously has never played Crysis, Bioshock, Lost Planet etc in DX10. If you hate Vista then stick with XP. If youre gonna run 8GBs of ram then make sure to get a 64bit OS because 32bit only supports 4GBs max. 8GBs is overkill and you'd be better off running 4 GBs and putting the money saved toward 2 Raptors in a Raid0 array and one 500GB storage drive. That would kick those 500GB drives and 8GBs of ram's butt big time.

There is a very easy point to make about Windows versions... XP only recognizes 4 gb of ram. If you want to use all that 8 gigs, you need Vista. Vista is also better for some gaming as it has more modern support for video than XP. If it not for gaming or you can live with 4 gb, go for XP Pro for sure. I just set one up for someone and he went with the 4gb ram and two 500 gb hdd, 2 dual core 3gb processors on a SLI board. Go with that and you can put two PNY 8500GTs in and SLI them together. make sure to have lots of fans, a big power supply and maybe even the liquid cooling system

Sorry dude, but Vista is probably your best OS if you're a gamer. Not all games run on Mac OS's. You could try Linux, but I'm not sure how it handles games.
