Are you protected with the right online backup software in todays era of computer hackers? Computer data failure is a worst-case scenario for most people, yet a good majority of them do not have an adequate data recovery plan in case of this situation. Recent attacks on Yahoo's database have consumers racing for online backup

aboutcomputer99.blogspot.com How To Back Up Your Computer (and why it's important!)
Over the past year I've emphasized, told and retold the following fact at countless speaking engagements and educational seminars: 100% of computer hardware fails 100% of the time.
You see--the question isn't IF our computers will break down, but WHEN? It could be today, or tomorrow, or the day after ... we just can't know. We're thankful it hasn't happened yet, but it would be foolish to ignore the inevitable.
Because the annoying reality is: computers crash unexpectedly and at the most inconvenient time.
On a personal note, this happened to me. My hard drive crashed for no apparent reason. But it wasn't my work computer--it was a computer that stored something of great personal value to me: the only good copy of my wedding video that I had been personally cutting together for months.
The bizarre thing was I had just completed editing the video the night before, and I hadn't even had the chance to play it for my wife. I had been working on that computer day after day for months, with no problems. I was intending on burning additional copies to DVDs, but I had just finished the changes I wanted to make. All I did was unplug the external drive from my laptop to connect it to my desk top computer ... but that was enough to crash the drive, completely erase months of work and destroy all the images of my wedding day.
But I was lucky, because what if my livelihood had depended on that hard drive?
Though both my wife and I literally felt sick to our stomachs for days afterward, I learned the most important lesson of my career and gained the vision for my life's work. My wife and I co-founded our company with this one undeniable truth: Your computer backup cannot wait until tomorrow.
And if your livelihood depends upon the information stored on your computer, the situation becomes even more grave. Did you know that, according to the Globe and Mail, 70% of Canadian small businesses that suffer a m ajor data loss close their doors within a year? (Joanna Pachner, Special to Globe & Mail Update, May 16, 2007)
Your time is a non-renewable resource, and losing a single day's work is incredibly frustrating.
I learned this lesson the hard way. But after I lost my wedding video--and realized all the things I should have done differently--I began researching data backup and putting together my wish list for the ultimate "no-brainer" computer backup system.
And here's the wish list that I came up with. I invite you to use this list as a benchmark against which you compare your current backup procedure, or any outsourced computer backup and recovery service you may be considering.
My Ultimate, "No-Brainer" Computer Backup Wish List
I insist upon a computer backup system that:
o Runs automatically, so I don't have to remember, be in the office, or set aside time to backup my information.
o Saves all my files, updates and changes every single day (even Saturday and Sunday), so I'll never lose a single day of my hard work again.
o Ensures my valuable client database will never be lost--because without my list, my business is doomed.
o Stores all my records at a separate physical and geographical location from my computer, so my information is protected even in the event of a theft, fire or flood.
o Automatically backs up my "backup" to a third location, so that I have complete redundancy, and so all possibility for information loss is eliminated.
o Does not copy over my last backup, but instead allows me to see what my work looked like yesterday, a week ago, last month, or even 12 months ago.
o Encrypts my records, so no one but me can access or read my files.
o Automatically tests my backup to make sure it's actually working, so my work will be 100% recoverable when my computer crashes again!
o Eliminates all time spent by me and my staff to complete and test our backups, so I have more time to concentrate on my business.
o Eliminates all backup hardware investments, so I have more money in my pocket.
In other words, I need a backup system that automatically:
- Saves my information.
- Protects the time I invested to complete my work and build my client database. (This is a biggie! Can you imagine building your list again from scratch?)
- Gives me the peace-of-mind that my next computer crash will be a mere inconvenience--not a catastrophe.
- Lets me stop worrying about backup altogether because I don't even have to think about it!
More than anything, my automated computer backup system works for me--does EXACTLY what it says it will, gives me back my work when I need it, and never requires me to spend any time fiddling with it.
I encourage you to ask yourself this question: does your computer backup system give you everything on this list?
If not, I urge you to make the switch to one that does before another day passes. Because, remember, your computer backup cannot wait until tomorrow ... just ask my wife, who will never let me forget it!
