Question by gaurav b: Purchasing Desktop computer in US? I am planning to purchase computer components in USA to take to my home country (India). I want this desktop for my home. I wanted to know if there would be any problem because of the different voltage ratings (110 V, 60Hz in US and 220V, 50Hz in India). If at all, there would be any problem, which specific parts hould I buy in India, rather than in USA. I am buying parts in US and assembling the desktop in India bcoz I get them at cheaper price and of better config. Best answer for Purchasing Desktop computer in US?:

Almost all PSUs are "switchable" and have a slider in the back to move from 115 to 230 volts. It will show that in the specs for the PSU. You'll probably need to buy a different power cord thou.

You have two issues: 1) Compatibility of components and 2) Govt Export Laws ITAR. You may not be allowed to bring in certain US Technology to India. 3) Power supply. 3) You can buy power adapters to handle the different power system. 1) Technically if you follow the specifications of each components you add for input and outputs, you should be fine. If you mix electrical standards on your internals, that maybe problematic. 2) You first need to check it it is legal. If it is not, you are a foreigner, and you look Arab to any American and if it's illegal, you will not only be out your money you spent for the parts, you might get thrown in jail for espionage-they will eventually release you, but not before going through a lot of grief-so make sure it's legal. Compatibility of sophisticated computer components one two country standards is one that is to lengthy to undertake in this forum. Parts are made all over the world. My guess would be, if your method was possible and cheaper, it would have been done. Another question I have is how do you determine what components you would like to purchase in the US and how do you know it will be cheaper in India?

I'm trying to purchase and take home these components: 1) Corsair 667Mhz 2GB (1x2GB) RAM 2) XFX GeForce 8400GS 256 MB Video Card 3) Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Processor 4) Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R Desktop Board (Motherboard) 5) Seagate 7200RPM 320GB Internal Hard Drive I feel these are general components and shouldn't be a cause for problem. What's your take on it?
