I think Windows Server 2003 is the best software to load as a base for gaming. 1GB Ram is pretty important, but you can get 512 when you buy, and add another 512 or 1GB later. Nvidia - I bought 8600GT and it seems pretty fast on most games. The 'major' differences reported on internet about overclocking speed improvements are over rated.. small differences to be honest, ignore them. I think 8600GT is low on the price/performance curve, above this, you pay a lot for small improvements. One more tip - download a few linux discs, I got ubuntu, pclinux, mandriva - burn to a CD, and reboot from CD Whichever one you like, you can make a 20GB partition (or maybe just 5GB for testing first) and have a dual boot - then your new computer, assuming you'll use Windows for gaming and Linux for net... you'll have no virus problems, or spyware - so no need to install antivirus or antispyware - then it's got no overheads.. keep the performance for the games! My machine feels Double speed on linux, and Windows runs faster with no startup programs too (but I only connect internet on Windows for important updates, it doesn't need any more now). Linux... XUbuntu requires 500MHz or better, 1.5GB Hard drive, 192MB Ram. Graphics card to enable all effect - wobbly windows, transparent windows, trailing effects, blur, expose, Desktop plane, Desktop wall, Viewport switcher, Widget layer (Macstyle), animations, custom animations for most things, Trail focus (windows lose colour, opacity, brightness according to your settings, or when last selected), window decorations (a la vista? mac? compiz? what style you like, it's here...) Shift switcher (where did Vista get the idea? but why didn't Vista make it look pretty like Linux?)

8800gt is best bang for your buck. two of these on an sli motherboard fantastic if your budget can allow it. to run two you will need 600watt+ rated power supply for more info on gpu's see http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/01/03/the_best_gaming_graphics/ and to run benchmarks, if this interests you use http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html for some great suggestions on hardware, see high end: http://arstechnica.com/guides/buyer/guide-200711.ars/4 mid-range http://arstechnica.com/guides/buyer/guide-200711.ars/3 as far as cost goes, it depends on what sort of machine you want to build. you can build a great gaming machine for about $ 1000, but really, the sky's the limit :0) the new skulltrail motherboard has 4 pci-e slots so you can run 4 video cards simultaneously (!). Also, the new nvidia 9 series are due to come out soon, these will have 2x 8800gt gpus on board with 512meg of ram each (1giug total vram). these will be very quick cards. no indication on price yet though. I built mine for about $ 700 with an 8800gts 320mb 6 months ago, but had to make a few compromises. just depends on how much youve got to spend. dual core cpu is fine for a gaming machine. its actually the gpu(s) that do most of the work, so if you get this aspect right, the rest will follow. 800mhz ram a good idea but not essential. 10,000 rpm hd a good idea too, but if budget won't allow, a 7200 will get the job done. put the money into the graphics card (s) and you'll be fine. see http://www.yougamers.com/articles/16583_the_2008_guide_to_gaming_pc_specs/ for how this works. good luck with it....
