Refurbished computer may sometime lag in terms of cosmetic looks, but it is made sure it doesn't lag in functionality. So if you are buying refurbished computer from someone like Dell, don't worry, have a shot! It will be great as you don't have to do much work on it besides what u described!

Refurbished generally means that it was sent back as faulty, then fixed and resold as "Refurbished". As far as I know, they carry the same warranty as a new one. They are supposed to be "good as new" when sold as "Refurbished". I have never bought one that way myself. If it was goofed once, then I buy it, it will goof again! Murphy's law is strongly enforced in my life!

A lot of debate goes on about this, but the fact is that refurbished computers aren't a bad deal, especially when you can't afford a brand new one. Refurbished means that the computer has been used before, tested to make sure everything works correctly, and sold at a lesser price. The only real downside is that there is already wear and tear on the computer. True, things may be working correctly when tested, but hard-drive, like most mechanical things, break down over time. They are simply replaced, but that's extra cost to you to buy a new hard-drive and have someone install it, assuming you don't know how. Not to mention you'll have to buy an operating system to put on a new drive, or even the refurbished computer, if nothing is installed. So it's a hit or miss. It's a good deal, but there are always inherent risks. But in all honesty, you're likely to get a decent machine.

I would never get a new machine. Computers last a long time. Btw. Refurbished does not always mean it was sent back faulty and repaired. They could be ex-leased machine's, second hand machine ect that have been cleaned up and reinstalled.

I am with most of the other postings. I have a theory about refurbished products in general. The were returned because of a problem while still under warranty. Which makes it less then a year old. Whatever was wrong with it was fixed and hopefully given a once over by quality control. With the exception of some cosmetic issues it might be better then new. Valid theory? Who knows. One thing I would do if you buy a refurbished laptop is get one with a year warranty. I have seen some for as little as 30 days. Some with 60 or 90. Some with a year. I too live by Murphy's Law. Depends on who refurbished it and how old i t is. Refurbished basically means that the computer was opened, possibly used, and returned for some reason (defective, ordered it with wrong parts, simply dissatisfied, etc.). It was then checked over, any defective parts replaced, and then sold as refurbished. If the original manufacturer (e.g. Dell or Lenovo) refurbished it, it's A-OK. I've gotten 2 refurbished Dells from Dell Outlet and both arrived practically new.
