Computer bags usually have extra padding to keep the computer from getting damaged.But there would be nothing wrong with having one for other stuff.

Laptop messenger bags have padding (either built-in padding or removable padding). Additionally, there is not much space for anything else except for the laptop. If you want to use that bag as a messenger bag only, I see nothing wrong with that.
