Sometimes, a problem with your computer can be a small, but annoying thing. In this case, computer fan glitches come to mind.

A computer fan is any fan inside a computer case. Their purpose is cooling. They might work by drawing cooler outside air into the case, or they may expel heated air from the inside. They might also blow air across a heat sink. Regardless, the cooling of the components of a computer is essential. Computers do not generate massive amounts of heat, but the increasingly rapid processing units do generate some, and unless cooling takes place, trouble will surely follow.

A heat sink is an environment or object with a lower heat capacity than the surrounding area or adjacent component. Heat will be drawn from the targeted area into the heat sink by thermal transfer. This is the concept of Thermal Equilibrium. It is why a window pane will feel cold to the touch. What actually happens is that heat flows from your finger to the cooler glass. The fans inside the computer blow air over the heat sink to dissipate the heat.

Fan problems can be divided into two groups. First, they cease to run, and second they can make excessive noise. The problems are related. A computer fan is just a normal simple fan that runs on bearings. When the bearing begins to go bad, or the fan gets out of alignment, it makes noise. When the bearings go bad, it stops running.

There can be several fans inside the computer. There is one connected with the power supply, one cooling the inside of the case, and one specifically cooling the CPU. When the problem is noise, the first step is isolating the fan that has the problem. The only other mechanical component inside the case that might be making noise is the hard drive itself. This is, of course, a totally separate problem. So, it is important to determine that the source of the noise is a fan, and then determine exactly which one. One suggestion is to stick the end of a paper cl ip into the fan blades for a few seconds stopping the rotation. If the noise stops as well, you have your culprit. Normally, however, you can locate the problem with just your ears.

The fans can be oiled. WD-40 is not recommended here because it is designed to remove moisture, and that is not the problem. Any light weight oil is good. A popular choice is 3 in 1 oil, although many experts tend to prefer sewing machine oil. If the oil works, you still should be aware that most likely this is only a temporary fix. The noise was trying to tell you something about the condition of the fan, and silencing it did not address that condition. In the end, replacement of the fan is going to be the permanent solution. The fans seem like minor little mechanical asides in the vast overall picture of hard drives and micro processors, but cooling is essential. You should give serious attention to the proper operation of fans. The true fan problems are what happen to your computer when they do not work properly.

You can hear it anywhere in the house and it kind of sounds like an airplane landing. Change your fan.If problem exists , then change power cable and at last replace the smps with a better one.....

Hi. Well, since it was loud from the first day you bought it, i think the noise is "natural". maybe it's time for you to buy another fan. (By the way, is it the CPU fan or the power source fan, or another fan?). Anyway, I got the same problem, but the noise raised in time. I have just removed the fan, opened it (it has a plastic cover which needs to be removed, then there is a round thing on the fan axis which also has to be removed carefully, not to be lost because you'll need it again) then i have cleaned it with some alcohol, and then i used some industrial oil or pasta (I think the car ones are good) and then i mounted the fan back and the noise was smoother. I reccommend it only if you have in mind to buy another fan anyway, if the method do esn't suit you. You have to see if it works before you close your computer case, because if it doesn't spin, you may damage your computer parts.

Some machines are built with louds fans.... I know that some Dell desktops have 2 or 3 fans at the back that push a tremendous amount of air into the system. The reason for this is that the Dell desktops tend use passive heatsinks (heatsinks with no fans for direct cooling) on the CPUs which tend to run hot.... You can do a search and replace the fans but in my opinion you will still have the airplane landing feeling.... Now if the fan is grinding then it should be replaced immediately.. One of the common problems is that as CPUs got hotter, the systems got louder.... Another final solution although it can be risky is unplugging the fans power connectors and installing a water cooling system in you computer.... These can cost anywhere from $ 100-400.... The scary part is that you are running water close to components using electricity and if the cooling system somehow leaks, you short the attached components...

Is this just a regular system or a gaming system? Back in 2001, it was pretty standard practice to attach extremely noisy and insanely fast fans to the cases and processors due the amount of heat caused by the CPU and Video Card, the type of fan that where you turn it on and you feel like you just shoved your head out of the window of a car going 90 mph. Now adays most fans run silent and processors and video cards aren't gernerating as much heat. When you first bought it, it might have had a temp probe in it, which changed that speeds, if it has gotten louder, the probe could be bad which is just keeping the fan on HIGH. It could be an external probe that is placed somewhere, or it could be under the board. Also, just a few manufacturers did use heavy duty fans on the systems. Honestly, if it is annoying you that much, remember it is 5 years old, go look at new ones, you can pick up a whisper quiet core 2 duo system for next to nothing, well, at least not the several thousands that good macines use to call, and if you really want pure silence, take yourself over to the mac side and pick up an Imac, you will be sleeping like a baby (yes, you can easily boot it with Windows if you insist)
