Think that every person that has been to high school knows what 'the' Trojan Horse is. It's a really big wooden horse that the Greeks used to infiltrate the city in the Trojan War. They stuffed some men inside the horse, so when the Trojans would take it in their city, they could come out and wreck the place. Well, in the computer world, a Trojan Horse does exactly the same thing. That probably explains the name.

A Trojan Horse is a small application that is formed out of two parts, a client and a server. The client is being used by the attacker to gain access to the computer. The server is installed on your computer (usually without you knowing it), if you open an infected file. When the server is successfully installed anybody can gain access to your hard drive with a simple program. Unfortunately, this program is so simple, that every person can use it and this makes the chance of getting hacked only bigger.

Now you might ask yourself, how the owner of t he client knows if you installed the program on your computer. This can be tracked with your IP. Your IP is a unique number that you receive from your Internet Provider that marks your internet connection. Any person with a Trojan Horse client can search for your IP and find your computer. That person doesn't even have to be the same as the one you downloaded the Trojan from.

A Trojan horse can do a lot of funny stuff (for the hacker), but it can also do serious damage to your computer. Your DVD-drive could be opening for no reason, a couple times in a row. If you're talking the microphone, the hacker knows exactly what you are saying. The hacker can play audio files, view images, send messages to the victim, delete files, block the keyboard and a lot more! If you really have a bad person on your tail, you're system can be completely dead in a matter of minutes.

Now what can you do to prevent that you get a Trojan Horse? Well, the best thing you can do is having a decent Anti-virus program installed. If you download a Trojan Horse by accident, the program should notify you and delete it. On the other hand, preventing that you get a Trojan Horse is better than deleting it afterwords. You just need to be careful what you download to your hard drive. If you don't know where the file comes from or who the owner is, don't open it. A really famous way of spreading trojan horses is through email attachments. If you open it, you're already too late. Just make sure that you know the person that sent you the email before you open it.

The conclusion of this article is that you have to be really careful with what program or file you open on your system. Check if you really know the source of it and if your trust it. To be absolutely sure you don't get infected, install a decent Anti-virus.
