It is without doubt that, in the not too distant past, a computer was considered to be an item that was required primarily by businesses and commercial and financial institutions rather than individuals. Private individuals owning a computer were a rarity. However, more recently, the existence of a computer in the average household has developed to a point where it is the exception rather than the rule. The computer has many uses. Home entertainment is one of the more popular uses, with access to video and music players. Gaming videos are also popular and online gaming is fast developing in its popularity. Many people simply surf the web to pass some of their free time. However enjoyable these computing activities may be, none of these uses can really be described as essential.

There are, though, an increasing number of activities that actually require the use of a computer that could be properly described as essential. Information gathering is the first of these . A simple search on the internet can provide the user with a wealth of information about virtually anything. Communication via electronic mail has overtaken "snail mail" as a means of giving and receiving information. Access to email has become a real necessity. Online banking has also become one of our everyday activities, negating the need to ever make a time consuming personal visit to the bank. Indeed, some accounts are only available online. We can book last minute travel, hotel, vacation and care hire deals online, often saving a significant amount of money in the process. We can do our shopping online, usually at a lower cost than visiting the shop personally. We can even file our tax returns online. We can socialise with our friends online through one or more of the social networking websites. We can even speak to our friends on the other side of the world by making voice calls over the internet. For anyone who, either by reason of lack of financial means to travel or through reduced mobility, the internet can provide a ready means of accessing the world outside of their home.

The conclusion to be reached from all of this is that the computer is indeed now an integral part of our lives. It is likely that this will become even more so in the future, with many governments pronouncing the ownership of a computer to be a basic human right! If you have not yet mastered the use of a computer and the internet yet, it would be wise to do so. It may well be that in future years it will be a skill that you will not be able to do without.

Question by : How fast is a netbook in comparison to a computer or laptop? My computer is about nine years old, and very slow. I'm looking to buy an Asus Eee PC 1000he Netbook. I've heard it's reasonably fast . . . for a netbook. I was just wondering how its speed stacks up next its larger (and pricier) counterparts? I have a netbook and on it right now and it is so fast, i used to have my computer last year but jeesh it was annoying it was slow and would freeze the netbook is great- many plugs so my ipod can charge and stuff, and everything is fast. I recommend it :) and they are handier to carry around than laptops <3

A netbook is just an undersized, underpowered laptop. It's meant to surf the web and run simple programs like word processors etc. so it's very slow compared to a laptop and desktop.

I recommend getting like a 12" laptop instead if you are looking a getting a netbook. Laptops are more powerful for sure

Relative to new laptops and desktops, netbooks are slow. They are only meant for basic tasks like simple web browsing and office applications. Its probably a little faster than your old desktop.

The ranking of how fast and the overall quality of the computers are as follows: 1) PC (Personal Computer) 2) Laptop 3) Netbook - With a PC, you have more space to include better components, which means it will be faster. - A laptop is good for use if you move around a lot (e.g. businessmen) but will have less warranty (1-2 years normally). This is because a Laptop has less room for components and therefore you will find a brand new PC from Dell to be faster than a brand new Laptop. As well as this there is less space for the laptop to have a fan and therefore the parts will overheat and deteriorate over time. - A netbook is a smaller laptop. This means it will probably be even slower. As well as this I find the keyboard to be too small and I wouldn't trust it to last very long. Overall I recommend you buy a new PC if you are going to spend money. It is easier to repair, will last longer and it will be the fastest and most useful. Things you want to look for are: - Processor and Processor Speed ( Commonly around 2.60 GHz) - Ram ( Around 1 GB) - Operating System (Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Mac OS)
