Question by Jeannine C: computer virus removal and slow start up? Hi, I have tried just about everything to get rid of my viruses and I thought I would see if there is anything else I can try before I have to format my disk. I had AVG when I got the virus. The virus name was winantivirus pro. I even had spyware that had trojans. I rmoved the AVG and I put in a current copy of Norton, Superspyware, windows defender, spybot, and I also turned off my system restore and ran all with it in that mode, at which time the Norton said I had a virus but it could not be removed because of incomplete files. I am running scans now with system restore off on trend micro and windows security safe, is there anything else I can do? It is taking about 5-7 minutes to start up and load my computer. Thank you in advance. PS, I can see the winantivirus on my computer when I scan. I can't find it anywhere to remove it. Does anyone know how to find it so I can remove it or any other info to help.........Thanks Best answer for computer virus removal and slow start up?:

Ok.... Try restarting your computer in safe mode. THen once in safe mode do a COMPLETE virus scan. THe thing with safe mode is that it does not run all these weird programs, so your virus scan has a better chance of catching and removing viruses and spys.

I had that same virus. WinAntiVirusPRO is a voodoo file. Details aside, Symatec offers a voodoo remover. Go to their site and find the voodoo remover. An alternative: there's a program called VundoFix or something along those lines. Follow the instructions it gives you. It removed all the voodoo stuff through one reboot. Worse comes to worse, do what I did: save EVERYTHING and wipe out everything on your computer. :)

Agree with other answerer. Go into Safe Mode to run your antivirus program. That way you will hopefully catch any self-executable files. When finished, to free up your RAM and add to speed: - set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none â€" they run continuously in the background and use memory. - review your start menu â€" remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis â€" load games, etc. on an as-needed basis. - from Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history. - run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take). - periodically, click Start, Programs, Run â€" they type ipconfig renew (that’s ipconfig space renew). These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible. It will also help if you download two free programs: Ad-aware and Spybot.
