For most computer users when the unit just stops working they think the worst has happened and it's time to buy a new computer. So you seek out a computer expert that may be able to help you select a new one. Do not go buy one first thing there are simple tests you can do that could save you from spending money just yet.

The first thing you need to do is make sure that the power is on. No I am not kidding some computer users plug the unit into a power strip. Later they find out that they or someone has hit the switch on the power strip to off. This happens a lot in the computer users in office that run short on electrical outlets and power supplies.

Now if you do not have power and the power strip is on then you will need to check the electrical panel yourself or have a maintenance worker do that for you. Even though the lights are on the electrical outlets may be on a separate circuit.

If you are using an UPS (uninterruptible power supply) it may be dead from the electricity being off all night do to a power outage in the area that you may not be aware of. This will cause the unit not to work properly until it is on for a while. Now let me explain how the UPS works. Inside the UPS is a battery and a series of electrical outlets. The battery is charged while the unit is plugged into a working electrical outlet. The battery powers the UPS in the event of power failure to the electrical outlet that the UPS is plugged into. The UPS unit converts the 12 volt battery power to AC power to run your computer and monitor for about ten minutes. This is to give you adequate time to save your work and shut the computer down.

Some of the outlets on the UPS are for surge protection only and will not work while the power has gone out. So this would make the electrical outlet the UPS is plugged into dead (no power). When this first happens giving you time to save your work and shut the computer down the other items plugged into th e surge protected outlets in the UPS are not going to work.

Another thing that you need to look for before you run out and buy another computer is the power cord. This happens when the computer has been moved around a little through the week. The power cord gets pulled out of the back of the computer just enough that the connection is broken. Just unplug the power cord completely from the computer and plug it back in. This also happens to monitors that have a power cord that can be unplugged from the back of the monitor.

On some computers there is a toggle on off switch in the back near the top on tower cases. Some times the switch is used by computer users after shutting the computer down far a long weekend. Then the next work day forget that they used that toggle switch. Or maybe the company IT personnel worked on the computer while you where gone and used that switch. As a computer user you may not be aware of this switch. It is very small and not well marked. So you will need to look hard for it.

Any suggestions? @Stan- Naww, I never knew this bit of information. Best answer for How do I fix a computer charging outlet?:

Answer by gadgetboyj
If you're lucky, the charging port may plug into the motherboard rather than being soldered on, in which case, the computer can be taken apart, and the port replaced with one from online, such as from eBay.
