Facts to Consider About the Computer Power Supply Unit [aboutcomputer99.blogspot.com]

Question by sTeViE b: How do I power up a car stereo using a power supply from a computer? I've heard you can use a computer power supply to power up an aftermarket car stereo in home.. I need to power up a car stereo from DUAL to test it. The old power supply I have is from a compaq, and it does not have a on/off switch... what wires would I need to splice and connect from the stereo to the psu? Best answer for How do I power up a car stereo using a power supply from a computer?:

I don't think it will work (though I may be wrong but I think not) because computer power supplies are switching power supplies, IOW they don't just give 5v and 12v outputs regardless of all other factors, those wires in the plug that goes to the mother board have to have inputs that tell the power supply it's okay to give the other components their voltage. Maybe you have another 12volt power supply around the house that can do it, many 12v "wall warts" have enough current to get it to at least turn on. It's entirely possible to use a PC power supply by using jumper wires across certain pins, though I'm not sure, nor do I know which pins to short. Obviously you could experiment, make sure you don't REALLY need the power supply and have a fire extinguisher ready.

i don't know if thats happening either but there are other ways ,, radio shake 120volt to 12v converters ,, just get one for 20$ splice the 12v side 3 wires white black and green , cut the green short you wont need that the white is ground and black is current ,, trust me it is , thats one way, you could also use a car batter charger plug it in put it on 12v charge and there you go red + black - ,, good luck

just get a 12v car charger and run the wires how u usually would and it should work. just fuse the wires cuz dual is not that great ps: the remote is just a wire to turn on the amp just get a speaketr wire from the 12v+ to the remote spot

Computer PSU's provide constant electricity to the computer allowing it to work properly and these units are considered crucial if you own a computer. There are many facts about PSU's that not many people know about and this article is going to elaborate on some facts about computer power supply units.

The life span of the device is measured in mean time between failures. Higher mean time between failures is always preferred since they ensure a long life span. Power supplies often last lesser then what the manufactures suggest. While an ordinary computer PSU has a life span of 100,000 operating house, some PSU's have a life span of 200,000 operating house. These numbers are rough estimates of the life of these units and due to various factors the life span of a power supply unit can be reduced by 50%.

A computer power supply that has sleeved cable looks aesthetically pleasing. Sleeved cables are easier to clean and maintain hence they are preferred by many people. These sleeved cables also prevent detrimental effects on air flow hence they are often recommended over normal cables.

A greater power capacity that is greater output wattage is not always good and ideally a computer power supply unit should have a wattage that is not too low or too high. Extremely high output is usually of no use and extremely low wattage units do not function optimally. Greater output wattage does not ensure that the extra electricity is used for high end graphic cards.

A good computer PSU should supply adequate electricity to all the parts of the computer and not to just one specific part. A good power supply unit should have added features like short circuit protection, under voltage protection, over voltage protection, over temperature protection and over current protection.
