the F stands for Function on PCs. On mainframes, they used PF for Program Function. The F8 is a windows Function. When it sees it pressed it automatically goes to safe mode. It is not a hardware function. F keys are used by applications and do different things depending on the app.

They stand for Function 1, Function 2, Function 3 and so on. What they do depends upon the context in which they are used. They are generic function keys that different programs can assign to different functions.

They are basic Function Keys - you can map the to do what you want IE - Short Cuts to options - Some applications will scrll through pages of the software by using the Function Keys PS - There are F1 to F24 - after F12 you press shift for F1 for 13 Shift + F2 - 14 Shift F3 -15 etc -

Function keys are shortcuts or special operators like F8--used when Windows is starting up. They were in regular use when running DOS, but Windows has made most of them redundant. Mostly they are used to access the BIOS or select a network connection, though laptops still use them for switching to an external monitor or setting sleep mode.
