What Are Some Disadvantages of Buying a Computer With Linux? [aboutcomputer99.blogspot.com]

Question by Josiah: What users are best suited for Snow Leopard computers? Windows? Ubuntu (Linux)? I am researching this for my High School Digital Production class. We are learning about the different computers and why each one works better for different people. I need to know for my paper. Any information and help would be absolutely great! I need to know for the Mac Snow Leopard, Windows PC, and the Linux (I do not know anything about Linux computers!!!) So if you could help, please do. If you have any very good useful resources that would be great too. Thank you so much! Best answer for What users are best suited for Snow Leopard computers? Windows? Ubuntu (Linux)?:

Windows is much better for the average computer user, ie., young children, the elderly, or just the average Facebooking, document-writing, music-listening, web-surfing, non-tech-savvy human being. This is because it's generally the most user-friendly, the most well-known, the most marketed, and it has the most features. Most software is made for Windows. Windows is simple, requires very little (if any at all) command-line usage, and really requires absolutely no computer knowledge at all to use since everything is made graphical with the common person in mind. Mac is much more suited for the technologically advanced teenager or young adult. It's slicker, looks more "futuristic", and is overall more of an advance in technology. There are very few trojans for Macs (although there still are some, but only tech-savvy's would know this). It's basic goal in mind is to make everything as small, portable, and virtual as possible - thus the new developments in iTunes, the iPhone, iPod, etc. Linux is strictly for the very technologically-savvy. When an error arises, you need to know your way around. You have to have some knowledge of the Terminal (command interface) and how to solve problems and errors. Although companies like Canonical (who developed Ubuntu) are working to make their distribution of Linux as user-friendly and commercial as possible, it just isn't there yet. Most people don't even know what Open Source means, much less how significant it is in society. You know how there's things like religion and politics in reality? Well there are these things in technology too. You either believe in the open source initiative, you don't believe in it, or you simply don't know what it is, in which case you'd use Linux, Mac, and Windows, respectively. Linux is the pro choice that most computer-literate folks use because it's free, it's safer than both Mac and Windows, and it's much, much more efficient. The simple problem is that it just isn't known to the gener al public yet, and the general public isn't ready to understand exactly WHY it's safer than Windows or Mac, or WHY this operating system is free.

The other person has NO IDEA what they are even saying. Windows, Mac and Linux are all Good operating Systems. They all are modern. Windows would be for people that don't want to have to buy a game console to play a few games. Windows is actually not the greatest out of all the choices. Windows is only used because it is the only one that is sold pre installed. Mac is good for just about everything except web servers and has a nice clean style its good for people that are organized and cant stand clutter. Linux(ubuntu) is almost the same as a mac. It is good for users that like customizing their desktop. People that like 100% free software. Linux is the most stable operating system and you almost never have any problems this is why it runs the majority of the web servers in the wo rld. It can play some windows software and games. I know many people from the age of 3+ that use linux. It is used a lot for video editing in hollywood movies. Watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=636VZ_R-NVs The main reason why linux is not the most popular desktop is because people don't know what it is and it isn't sold at stores like bestbuy. The best way to get your opinion is to try them all go to ubuntu.com and try it out.

Many times when people decide to use Linux as their main system, they think about buying a new computer with Linux installed on it versus having Windows on it. While this might seem like a good idea since that's the operating system you want to use, there are actually a number of disadvantages to doing this that you need to be aware of.

Many times Linux only systems are more expensive. The reason is that these computers are not ordered in bulk meaning the costs can't be as low as the more mass produced computers. Sometimes even the same hardware costs more with Linux than with Windows on it.

Another disadvantage is a limited selection. While you can buy more than a dozen Windows computers and install Linux yourself, you might only get one hardware set up that comes with Linux. Doing it on your own on a Windows system, gives you more choice.

If you get a Linux only system, you don't have the option of dual booting. This is a problem at times because yo u just lose out on the option if you every want to boot up in Windows to use certain software.

At times, you can get a refund on the cost that you paid to get Windows put on your system. This means you can't use the Windows side, but you will be able to save even more money on your computer.

This is not to say to use Windows over Linux. It's just that you can get a better deal if you install Linux yourself on the hardware. The one thing you need to make sure of is that you buy a computer that has hardware that is going to work with Linux. One tip is to use Wubi to help you install a Ubuntu to your system making dual booting very easy without all the technical hassles that you can face.
