Not true. I have an android and I get ads from time to time.

Having many ads on screen at the same time will reduce performance. Since a phone is not nearly as powerful as a desktop or even a laptop, they have to cut down on the amount if data that has to be processed to attain acceptable performance. The other problem is that mobile internet services are not as fast or reliable as land-based cable connections, so if many ads have to be downloaded, that performance of the main content will suffer since there might not be enough bandwidth available on the internet connection.
