If you only wish to delete individual files, then go to download.cnet.com and search for "file shredder" programs. Such programs will overwrite the file with random garbage data before deleting it, thus ensuring it can never be recovered. If you want to wipe out your entire hard drive, then use Derek's Boot-And-Nuke (commonly referred to as DBAN). It does the same thing, but it goes over the entire hard drive and it writes over everything several times.

There are programs that shred free space that has deleted files. Just do a search.

The answers i read so far are intended for completely wiping out the data from the hard drive so that they are not recoverable. Such technique is more commonly used in the government and in sensitive-information-departments, for those people has to make sure nobody can ever be able to "undelete" or recover files that have been deleted (even with SHIFT+DEL). But i see that your case is simply "cleaning" your computer, you are not concerned about other attempts to recover data that you have already deleted, in this case, i think SHIFT+DEL is more than enough, no need to download any extra software. To make files unrecoverable after deleting use any program that can wipe (overwrite) free space. Ccleaner has that function, Heidi Eraser is another.
