Question by Mom of E and S and 38 weeks with # 3: Is it practical/economical to buy a used laptop computer? This laptop is getting old and it sucks. I keep asking my hubs to buy a new one-this is the one we use most often since it has wireless internet. He says they are too expensive. Would it be a stupid idea to buy a used one? If I bought a used one would it come with all the software or would I have to buy that again? Thanks! If you just need a lap top that can handle word documents and e-mail then you don't have to go very high end and you should be able to get a lap top for pretty cheap. Computers start getting expensive when you want the to do harder things. If you were wanting to do online gaming you would need a better computer and the price would go up considerably. If you by a used laptop then have someone who knows computers with you. Someone you can trust and if the seller won't let you inspect the machine don't buy it.

In English: Dont buy a used laptop. Laptops are made to last 2-3 years (if dell, acer, or hp) or 4-8 years(if toshiba, gateway, Sony, Apple). You dont know what someone did to the laptop before you get it. If they left it on 24/7, the laptop may have a half life (1-1.5 years). If you dont go anywhere with the laptop, its better to have a desktop. You get much more bang for the buck and you still spend less. Lets look at bestbuy: A $ 400 dollar Desktop is equivalent to a $ 800 dollar laptop. They are faster and last longer. Good Luck!

These days, you can get a new computer for nearly the same price as a refurbished or used computer. You might save a few dollars, but probably nothing significant. Places like Walmart and Best Buy often have laptops for $ 300-$ 400. As for the software, it depends on wh at you want to use. The computer will have the basic stuff, but if you want MS Office or Photoshop or something like that, you'll have to buy that separately. If you already have a copy, then you can just use the disc to install it on the new computer. Just make sure that your licensing agreement allows you to install on more than 1 computer. Some software only allows you to install it on one computer.

Hi there, If you bought a used laptop all the operating software should be on the computer. The previous owner may have done a clean re-install or maybe just deleted the personal files they didn't want you to see. I have to say it is a bit of a gamble, the source of where you get it from would be most important. A trusted friend or a trusted computer shop would be your best bet to not get burned. It's just like buying a used car, it works NOW but there are no guarantees or warranties. I hope it all works out for you :)

No; laptops are never economical and laptops get aggravated wear and tear and are much more likely to be broken or break-down used. Your best bet for the $ is to buy a desktop computer returned off a corporate lease or buy a cheap Dell on the monthly payment plan. If you have an external monitor you can use it with the new desktop. I think Dell will even send someone out to hook it all up for you. If you bought software for your current laptop, you are entitled to uninstall it from the laptop and reinstall it on the desktop. If it's something like Office you might need to call Microsoft to ask for an activation reset, just explain you bought a new PC and /moved/ Office from the one computer to the other one. If one person refuses, just hang up and call back and talk to someone else.

Hi, In response, Yes - I have found many many very reasonably priced Used computers on ebay, quite often. I keep an active eye on the listings, read them thoroughly and always ask the Seller Questions if something in the listing seems unclear or odd. Immed. beware of ads or listings that say As Is.....those are not for what you are asking !! Yes, you want to look for Laptops > Used or Refurbished > keep refining your search to include 'includes XP, vista, win7 whatever" and make sure it states within the ad that it has a good working operating system (which is how XP, vista etc. are technically titled) and what operating system (OS) it is being listed as running. This is always good to Ask Seller quest., as some sellers will List an OS - but they fail to tell you that the Hard Drive it would Live On - isn't Included, just an oper. sys. disk so you can install it on a hard drive YOU would put IN...not good to buy, in those cases. Ideally, you Need the Hard Drive to be IN the machine you buy - and Working well. You want to keep refining to make sure what you are looking for has the wireless internet card that would be required for it to work like the one you are use to (also called a NIC or WLAN card). You will want to make sure it includes a decent amount of memory (at least 512 or More - but enormous gigabytes (GB) or terabytes(TB) of memory aren't neccesary to good function but they do make you slightly faster the larger the amount of memory). Any Processor above a Pentium 4 - example CoreDuo, DualCore, are better than Pent.4's. - will supply enough processor speed and performance for a general household use laptop. Make sure the ad/ listing states the machine is in good working order, battery life is another question for the seller - you want at least a fairly new battery or your other new cost will be getting a new one.....and they can be pricey ( approx.$ 50 and Up). Ask if cords and adapters are included. Ask if the Optical Drive ( cd's or dvd's ) is working and fully operational. Ask if the Display screen is unscratched, & not missing pixels (blank spots where stuff should be on screen). As far as other Software - if the seller says or states it HAS an operating system, then the only other software you would want to worry about is if you had Purchased like a Tax prep. program and want to retain it - you should Have a disk from buying it. same with games, photo software, bookeeping, etc. But as long as it Has Microsoft or Apple operating system software - pretty much the rest - like Acrobat reader for documents, PDF for things like manuals online that come up in that format and your machine opens for you - Java for game sites, etc. THOSE can most all be found Online at your leisure and free downloaded and installed with little or no trouble. If you paid big money for Anti-virus software (Norton, Kaspersky, Symantecs. McAfee) you should be able to transfer your license key to a new machine with a download of the latest version off the internet, and a short email to the (Norton, McAfee, etc.) people who own the licensing. If you didn't keep a copy of YOUR key when you paid first. With those type of guidelines you should be able to find a decent used laptop either on ebay, amazon, searching on online 'swap / sale / auction' sites, or even local newspaper advertising classifieds. Don't buy a used laptop. There's serious maintenance that needs to be done to a laptop that's over 2-3 years old (like cleaning out the dust inside and replacing the dried out heat conducting paste under chips like the CPU) to properly refurbish one. It's tedious and not a job for the layman. It's unlikely the previous owner has done it. If you're using your laptop for email, Facebook, Google searches, school papers and for what 80% of the people use Microsoft Office for, get a good 10" netbook for half the price of a decent laptop. As anexample, here's one for $ 355 from Amazon. It's made by ASUS and receives 4 stars out of 5 based on 108 user comments. ASUS is one of the biggest manufacturer of laptops and netbooks. http://www.amazon.com/Seashell-1005HA-PU17-BK-10-1-Inch-Black-Netbook/dp/B002P3KMXA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1264176078&sr=8-2 But make sure you compare the netbooks sold by Amazon with the ones just introduced by the manufacturer's since Christmas. The newer one are much faster and has longer battery life per charge (like over 10 hours). Check out how the laptop feels at a place like BestBuy before you order them from Amazon in case you can save on the purchase price. Even if the previous owner left software on an old laptop, you'd not likely be able to get the security updates (very important). There is enough decent OpenSource (meaning free) software on the web for most common uses. There are many websites that reviews these programs and give you a virus-free site to download your own copy. Check out www.cnet.com to find all sorts of very good free programs, with reviews and free download. Microsoft gives away an excellent antivirus suite call "Microsoft Security Essentials"; Sun gives away a decent substitute for Microsoft Office called "OpenOffice.org". For most people, it does most everything that Microsoft Office does, and it works with files from Microsoft Office.

I bought a used laptop from Craigslist a few months ago, mainly because I've never had one before and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. To be honest, my desktop is SOOO much better than the laptop. You can download a lot more, it has more memory, not as many problems. The laptop I got has a really short battery life. You basically can't use it unless it's plugged in. (It turns off after 30 mins.) It's a fairly older laptop, but I dunno. Perhaps I'm just biased because I like desktops a lot better than laptops. Laptops are good for basic convenience things, like just internet and email. (While being lazy on the couch or whatever.) If you want to put programs on it or do anything other than the basics, I'd go for a desktop. I suppose my answer is go for a desktop if you plan on using programs and want more memory/faster computer in general (like others said, you can get a new desktop about the same price give or take as a used laptop), or go for the laptop if you just need a new one for the basics. *shrug* Good luck choosing. I know my answer really wasn't very technical, I'm not very computer knowledgeable either.
