It really depends on the problem. For simple problems, like a slow system, you should probably run the disk defragmenter, found in START>ALL PROGRAMS> ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS. In that same location in the start menu is a disk cleanup tool. These tools will clear away unnecessary and temporary files and organize the file clusters on the hard disk. Then try a program called CCLEANER, it basically does the same thing as disk cleanup, but with added features that will correct registry errors and do a better job of clearing out temporary files. If you suspect a virus, run a virus scan in your antivirus software. If you don't have antivirus software, download an open source antivirus software, I recommend Avast! Antivirus(http://www.avast.c om/). If the virus scan fails to erase a virus or your system fails to boot due to a missing file, back up your data. If your system boots, copy the files you want to save to a flash drive or external hard disk or burn them to a CD or DVD. If your system doesn't boot, you should either 1. backup the data using another computer(this would mean taking the hard disk out of one computer and placing it in another), or 2. take the computer to a repair shop (what you wanted to NOT do) simply for a backup. Then find your Windows CD, and reinstall Windows.
