Many people complain about speed. There is a variety of ways to speed up your computer using ethical mods. One category that will slow down a computer during boot, and when it is running, is having too many programs startup when the machine starts. This is a tremendous waste of resources that can be solved with a mod. First, look at the software settings. If there is not a feature to prevent a piece of software from running during boot then you will have to modify the registry. This is done by changing the "Run" key in your Windows registry. ‘HKCUâ€"SOFTWAREâ€"Microsoft-Windows NTâ€"CurrentVersionâ€"Windows' contains the Run Key. There you will find a list of software that runs when the computer is started. Choose the software and then change the value of the key to 0, close and reboot. The software will now be prevented from running on your free test laptop during boot sequence.

Another of the more common test laptop mods is dimming the screen.

If you are stuck in an airport or a coffee shop with no way to plug in your charger then dim your laptop with a mod to screen to save power. If you live in a dorm and are concerned someone might steal your data with a USB stick then mod the feature like this. Go to 'HKLM-SYSTEM-CurrentControlSet-Control-StorageDevicePolicies'. Then create a DWORD value named 'WriteProtect'. Set it to 1. After you re-boot no one will be able to steal your data by plugging into your USB drive.

If you feel uncomfortable performing mods to your registry then look for some reliable software that will do for you. While this limits your options, it can be safer. Nonetheless, if you take time to back up your machine and are careful as you perform each mod you should be able to make all the mods you want with no trouble. The important thing is to back up the registry. It is not a bad idea do a complete system backup as well. Test laptop mods can be found all over the Internet. The elder geek has a complete list of the Windows registry mods starting with Windows95 all the way up to today's most current version.

There are all sorts of mods to do all sorts of things. As you gain experience you will find your free test laptop can run better and faster when you customize the IP stack or tweak things like the receive window. Enhancing security with the use of mods is popular too. Become a member of one of the many security forms. The people there will be glad to show you the mods best for your machine.
