Question by B: Would computer mice be a lower quality if you bought them from walmart instead of a computer store? I bought a computer mouse from walmart, and it doesn't work near as well as my older one that I bought from a computer store, even though they're the exact same model. You don't "break in" a mouse. And no, it shouldn't make any difference, if it's the same brand and model. Exchange it. It might just be defective.

I bought a very cheap mouse from the UK equivalent of Wal-Mart (Asda) and it has worked find for several months now. It cost just $ 7.50 and I can't see how a $ 30 Microsoft brand mouse could do the job better

Simply put I would say it's a Wal-Mart issue. That's just my personal opinion on the matter but I used to work for Radio Shack and had a discussion with my manager at the time who claimed to know someone in Wal-Mart's upper buying echelon who had told my boss that Wal-Mart has a strategy of going to electronics companies and buying their potentially dysfunctional electronics. Basically, the way it was explained to me was that electronics companies have a certain quality control ratio for their products. For instance: If say Sony (just as an example) makes 1000 PS3 units and that their QC ratio is 1:25 then if 25 of those PS3s don't meet Sony's specs then Sony generally would have to scrap the whole batch and start again. This is where Wal-Mart steps in. Wal-Mart finds out that Sony has a batch of PS3s that dont meet specs so they contact Sony and offer to buy the whole lot of to-be-scrapped PS3s for "cost" (the base cost of manufacturing to cover materials and maybe labor.) Wal-Mart figures that just because 1 out of 25 PS3s are bad doesnt "exactly" mean that ALL PS3s in that lot are bad. By doing this, Sony doesn't make a profit but they also don't lose all the money they spent making the lot of units in which some of are defective. By doing this, Wal-Mart does Sony a form of favor by allowing them to recoop their money plus it gives Wal-Mart the chance to sell a PS3 for less than the competition due to the fact that Wal-Mart paid significantly cheaper for their lot than say Best Buy. This gives Wal-Mart an edge sometimes when people are looking for a cheap buy BUT those same people are at risk of getting one of the PS3s that were defective. Wal-Mart knows this and that's why they're so open to taking back merch; they know it's potential garbage. Bottom line: Beware Wal-Mart electronics and run away even faster from Electronics Dept employees. I used to work in general merch receiving @ Wal-Mart and our dock was right near Electronics so I would frequent that dept during breaks. Needless to say the Elec Dept folks weren't quite up to speed on the products (nor should they be because Wal-Mart's training is terrible, fyi) and often misquoted information, some of which was printed right on the outside of the box they were holding. If you shop for electronics at Wal-Mart then you're taking your technological life into your own hands. But that's just my opinion =]

What do you mean "doesn't work as well? Most mice either work or they don't unless its an acient trackball. It could be the surface your using, my laser mouse can work on anything but my optical and ball mice have to have a good surface like a mouse mat (I use a pad of paper).
