Question by CognitoCon: Where can I find a really good i7 computer for 700 bucks and under? I don't mind refurbished products. Best answer for Where can I find a really good i7 computer for 700 bucks and under?:

Answer by Mercuri
Good luck. The i7 processor, motherboard, and RAM by itself is $ 700.

Answer by The man punted Baxter!
This is probably about as close as you'll get - http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/desktop-studioxps-435mt/pd.aspx?refid=desktop-studioxps-435mt&s=dhs&cs=19&~oid=us~en~29~desktop-xps-435mt_cto_1~~ But it comes with a cruddy GPU, so it's not a gaming machine, if that's what you're after. Or anything that requires a nice GPU. You can upgrade to a 4850 for $ 150 more, or buy one at Newegg for $ 100 and it's decent. But i7 and cheap don't mix well.

Answer by Jim
yeah, Mercuri is right. Good luck on that one. The motherboard is $ 350 or so and the processor is around $ 320. Now you need some RAM and that is the more expensive DDR3 type. Refurbished? The i7 is Intel's latest and greatest processor class and its going to be YEARS before anybody is refurbishing i7 computers!

Answer by Seth
at tiger direct refurbed there is a gateway. It also has 3gb of RAM and a ati 4850 video card. It doesn't appear to include a monitor, but it does appear to include a mouse, keyboard, and speakers. It also includes Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit so you can easily upgrade the RAM if you want without worrying about the operating system. You can build a computer with parts from newegg.com for about $ 650, but that won't include an operating system, so really you're getting the best deal from the prebuilt system from tigerdirect.

It attacks your computer like the South American army ant. Tiny, harmless looking critters by themselves, in larger numbers they can cover, kill and dissolve a full grown cow in a matter of hours.

Okay, maybe not exactly like that. But, wood shop and machine shop owners are experiencing the devastating effect manufacturing dust can have inside their shop computers. And they are looking for answers.

It doesn't take much to ruin your day, especially, when metallic dust meets sensitive electronic components. Electricity chooses to travel in the shortest route possible, and little bridges of metal dust make great short cuts. Zap! WRRrrrrrr...

And wood dust makes a great insulating blanket. That's okay if you're lost in a big wood bin and freezing to death, but to a hard working computer it can be bad news. Heat sinks and fans attempt to dissipate the heat from within your computer, but a layer of dust can reduce or prevent this transfer of heat. Als o, computer fans can malfunction when dust and grime are allowed to build up. Things heat up. Computers die. Data is lost. Business suffers.

Okay, what's the answer then? How do you protect your computer from dust?

The actions you are willing and able to take to protect your computer equipment from dust depend on a large number of individual circumstances. Regardless of your situation, I recommend you take a three-front defensive position and optimize for each of the following areas:

o Computer room environment

o Protective computer dust barriers

o Computer maintenance

Let's look at each of these areas individually.

Computer Room Environment

Control the environmental conditions surrounding your computers. The ideal solution would be to keep your computers and monitors in a clean, climate controlled computer room. In other words, take them out of the danger area. Of course, this is unrealistic or undesirab le to many shop owners, who want, or need the computers to operate in the immediate work area.

So what then? Do what you can to control the dust and air pollutants in the shop. Use and maintain dust collectors for woodworking machines and a ventilation system for the shop area. And, if you can't move the computers out of the shop, try to move them across the room, away from welding, grinding or direct contact with billowing sander dust.

Protective Computer Dust Barriers

These include computer dust covers, dust filters, computer dust bags, and computer enclosures. Each has its advantages and limitations as described below. Determine which option is the best solution for you.

Standard computer covers are made by a number of manufacturers. Usually plastic or vinyl, they are cheap, but effective in keeping dust off your computers and monitors. However, they may only be used while your computer equipment is shut down. And, you must re member to put them on. Every day. In other words, they are almost useless in a busy shop.

Computer filters, on the other hand may be used while the computer is running. Also very cheap, these small pieces of loose mesh material are placed over fan air intakes in the computer case to remove dust from incoming air. Some have experimented with using panty hose, BrilloƂ® Pads and other household items with some success. The main drawback with computer filters is their small surface area. They clog up quickly in dusty areas and must be cleaned, or changed frequently to allow the unimpeded flow of cool air into the computer case. Another drawback is that they leave other openings in the computer case unprotected, allowing fine dust to infiltrate the CD ROM drives, floppy drives and other small openings.

Relatively new on the scene, computer dust bags are a combination computer cover and computer filter. Designed for the harsh, dusty and smoky cond itions inherent to wood shops and machine shops, these innovative covers entirely encase the computer processor or monitor at all times, allowing the entire surface of the bag to act as a huge dust filter to remove dust from incoming air. Monitor dust bags have a see-through, anti-static front to allow a clear screen view, and are very effective in keeping dust, wood chips and other debris out of the cooling vents. At around $ 20 or less, the recommended life-span of the computer dust bag is 3-12 months, depending on the level of dust in the shop. A possible drawback to using the computer dust bag is reduced access to CD and floppy drives. However, it is possible to use these drives if you cut a hole in the dust bag and cover it with a door flap, which is included with the bag. You may also have to cut an access slot to use your USB ports.

Finally, computer enclosures are typically metal or wood, box-like cabinets which your computer processor and monitor a re placed in to protect them from the surrounding environment. A variety of fan and filter combinations introduce fresh air into the enclosure. Computer enclosures have the added advantage of protecting your equipment from blunt force trauma, such as a falling 2x4, chemical splashes and other things harmful to your computer. Filters must be changed regularly. Disadvantages include high price, greater amount of space required, and filter maintenance.

Computer Maintenance

Finally, the third part of a sound computer dust protection strategy is computer maintenance. Yes, that means cleaning. Does that scare you? It's easier than you think. You don't have to buy all kinds of expensive tools and cleaning agents, and no heavy scrubbing or complicated disassembly is needed. The most important thing is to maintain a regular computer cleaning schedule. It may be as simple as opening the computer case once every three months to blow out the dust. Educate yourself on the computer cleaning basics and decide the right course of action for yourself. For a copy of the Standard Operating Procedure, "Computer Cleaning and Dust Protection in an Industrial Environment", which you can modify to fit your own requirements go to http://www.computerdust.com. It's free when you sign up for "The Computer Dust Solutions" newsletter.

Just as numerous insects and animals perish when attacked by the army ant, a great number of computers are killed by dust every day. Don't let it happen to you. Follow the common sense ideas shown here and stop computer-killing dust in its tracks!

Laptops have been around for quite few years now but still desktop computers have maintained their popular position in the market. Majority of offices, homes, shops etc are still equipped with desktops. Laptops can be seen with the traveling executives or the type of people who are quite busy with their presentations before their clients. Keeping them aside, others love to work on PCs.

Despite its bulky size, a PC is liked by everyone while a compact laptop has less number of takers. The demand for PC is increasing worldwide today. So, what are the factors that have kept PCs at the top of the popularity?

Desktop computers can have several advantages compared to laptops:

1. Easy availability of spare parts The components or parts of personal computers are uniform across the globe and are available in all major computer markets. They are available at low prices while laptop parts are more delicate and expensive. Moreover, desktop repairing professi onals are available in large numbers and you can get your PC repaired or upgraded more easily than your laptop.

2. Easy Customization All computer cabinets leave space for expansion slots. These expansion slots can easily accommodate your customization needs. Technology changes fast in the computer world and you need to upgrade your computer from time to time. This type of flexibility is hardly available with the laptops.

3. Fast assembling and disassembling Computers are easier to assemble and disassemble than laptops. PCs are not as delicate as laptops and thus do not require sophisticated handling as laptops do. They need less time in assembling and disassembling by a hardware expert.

4. Easy add-ons or replacement Computer is a device in which the addition of components and accessories is more convenient than in laptops. You can easily extend your hard drive's capacity or computer memory. In laptops, these features are difficult to attain.

5. More space to remove heat Many people would bat in favor of laptops because of their capacity of working on Rechargeable Batteries. But they are not aware of the fact that due to these batteries, a laptop is left with less space to release heat. On the other hand, computers have more space to remove heat.

One more important reason of desktop's sustenance lies in their manufacturing companies. Most of the leading desktop manufacturing companies have only entered the mobile PC manufacture segment. While these companies want to sell their laptops at premium rates, they don't want to lose their huge market of desktops. Leading laptop brands like Apple, Lenovo and HP are also the leading manufacturer of desktops. They have sizable revenue from their desktop sales. Thus, desktop computers are going to sustain in the marketplace and continue to be a popular choice of a large number of people in the coming years too. However, the number of laptop users is also go ing to grow simultaneously but it's unlikely that we are going to see office complexes with laptops instead of fixed computers.

Question by : Will moving a HDD with Retail Windows 7 to a Lenovo Desktop Computer boot? Hey guys, I was wondering if I can move my old HDD with windows 7 retail (NOT OEM) to my new purchased Lenovo Desktop as my main HDD to boot with without having any problems. The problem is that I visited many forums to see if this is possible, and most of them said no but those answers applied to OEM Windows OS's but not retail. By retail I mean bought over the counter and then not pre-installed. So I was wondering if the techy side of this community knows if this is possible without losing files or having any problems because I have alot of stuff on my HDD and i just dont want to ghost it over or back it up to another HDD, I just want to use it, also i plan to format the Lenovo HDD so that I may use it as my gaming HDD. (ITS A RETAIL WIN7 NOT OEM) I just want to make it clear. Please answer this please because I really want to use my Lenovo computer and move my graphics card and my HDD over so that I may game in peace. Best answer for Will moving a HDD with Retail Windows 7 to a Lenovo Desktop Computer boot?:

Answer by Hayley
Probably not. Unless the hardware was almost exactly the same which I doubt. The problem is NOT that one is OEM and another retail...it has to do with the registry. The registry is created when you install Windows. It's basically a record of everything on the computer and all the parts/pieces installed on it. If you try to load a disk with a registry too different from the current hardware, it won't load. May work, but no guarantee... You can always install Win 7 on the new machine...or put the disk into an external housing connected via USB and just launch programs and store files from there as a secondary drive.

aboutcomputer99.blogspot.com Basic Tips to Speed up your Computer's Performance

Eroding computer performance by your Windows-based machine can sneak up on you gradually. You may find its performance deteriorating increasingly until one day you realize you must fix it or buy a new one. Signs of poor performance can include applications running very slowly, programs closing or freezing up suddenly, and a generally slower response time to OS (operating system)-related commands. I have compiled 9 fixes for you here that you can leverage right now to greatly improve your computer's performance.

Fix #1: Download and run MS Service Pack 2: Every operating system requires patches and upgrades by its maker from time-to-time, with Microsoft XP being no exception. While Service Pack 2 was released in 2002, some people with older systems are still not running it: make sure your computer is. You can download it FREE from Microsoft's Web site. Search for "Microsoft Downloads" using your search engine.

Fix #2: Run the Disk Cl eanup utility: Your computer likely has a number of unused and unneeded files that take up valuable space on your hard drive and slow performance. Run your FREE, built-in Disk Cleanup utility to automatically remove these files. Find it by going to: Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup and following the prompts.

Fix #3: Defragment your hard drive: Over time, your computer will store files in an increasingly inefficient manner on your hard drive, affecting file retrieval times and other performance factors. To fix this, you need to defragment your hard disk drive. To do this for FREE, just go to: Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter. First, highlight the drive you want to clean up (e.g., C drive) and choose Analyze. Once complete, choose Defragment. Note that the defragmentation process could take up to an hour or more, so do this during a time when you can step away from your computer.

Fix #4: Run an anti-virus tool: Computer viruses are malicious programs that drastically affect your computer's performance, either all at once or insidiously over time. You can stop a virus attack by installing and running anti-virus software which performs regular scans, locates the offending viruses and quarantines them. Symantec's world class antivirus tools are an excellent choice and you can find them on their Web site. Search online for "Symantec."

Fix #5: Clean your registry: Your computer's registry is a tool that most non-computer specialists never see but which is vitally important to computer operations. Your registry stores settings and options for your hardware, operating system, and other software. Unfortunately, given its fundamental role in the performance of your system, your registry is often the target of attack or infection. To thoroughly and automatically clean your registry, run a regular registry scan using a r egistry cleaning tool.

Fix #6: Run anti-spyware software: Spyware is computer software that installs itself in your computer and performs a number of unwanted functions, including monitoring your computer usage and interfere with your control. It represents a real threat and has become a significant problem in recent years. Fortunately, fixes are easy to find and include a number of free and inexpensive anti-spyware programs. Try SpyBot Search & Destroy. Get it FREE here online. Search online for "SpyBot Search and Destroy."

Fix #7: Increase your computer's memory: Today's applications require more and more memory (RAM) to run. If your computer is more than two years old or if you selected the minimal memory option upon purchase, you might benefit from adding another 1 GB or more to your computer. Check online or at your local computer dealer for pricing.

Fix #8: Clean your hard drive: More comprehensiv e than the Disk Utility tool introduced above, cleaning your hard drive with professional cleaning software is a great way to improve performance. CCleaner is free and does the job well.

Fix #9: As a last resort, re-format your hard drive: If after trying all of the above items and your computer still performs poorly, a last resort is to completely reformat your hard drive. Warning: proceed with caution since this action will erase your entire hard drive, including your operating system (OS)! If you decide to take this route, consult an online tutorial for how-to steps. At minimum, remember two things: be sure to back up all of your files and applications and retain a copy of your OS on CD so that you can re-install it later.

It is predicated that the shipment of the personal computer will reach 352.4 million in this year, which has increased by 14.3% when compared with the last year. Actually, this predication is less than the previous one. The customers' demand for the personal computer is becoming low; what is more, their interest for the tablet computer is increasing. It is estimated that the ten percent of the personal computer shipment will be replaced by tablet computer. Experts maintain that the growth of the PC market meets the turning point.

The assaults for the PC market are mainly coming from movable device which can provide the application to customers from anytime and anywhere, such as the media tablet and smart phone. These devices are regarded as the products to fill up the deficiencies of the personal computer, even to replace the PC. In the long term, hosted virtual desktops will bring bad effect to the desktop. The personal computer is the necessity of life, but its industry is unable to bring the innovation and relying heavily on the reducing the price to stimulate the shipment. With the development of market, the suppliers are distinguished by the innovation of service and technology; therefore, the suppliers are facing so many challenges.

There are five elements to challenge the driving force of the PC industry. First is the new emerging market which will take fifty percent of the personal computer market. Second is the uncertain economic situation. Thirdly, the functions of the tablet computers are near to the PC, and attract the customer to give up the PC. Customers are more likely to choose the tablet computer with more entertainment function. Forth, the functions of the PC are owned by the other device, so the service life of the personal computer will be lengthen. Users do not need to change the computer frequently. The related integrated circuit is MAX485ESA.

Best answer for My work is remote control accessing my personal computer without my permission?:

Answer by Vaati76
If it is your personal computer, do you know that it is your work. When I say personal computer, I mean like you bought it from the store your self and it was not given to you by anyone from your company. If you do not know it is your work, your computer has been hacked and you should get it offline ASAP, meaning take out any wires for internet and if you are using WiFi disconnect from the network. DO NOT make any online purchases or enter ANY personal information on that computer! If you have, watch your credit for identity theft. Also, you then should take it in to a computer repair place and have them fix it for you, or if you can do this, wipe out your hard drive and re-install the operating system your self. If they gave it to you saying use this as your computer, then they may do what ever they want.

Answer by TrustTheBear69
If you are doing any business relate type of work on your computer or a computer they gave to you, they actually do have the right to access your computer. If the answer is no, they are violating Laws. You can turn off remote access, but they may be accessing the ones you have set for file sharing. You probably need to find where you name the computer and give it a different work group name. Almost ever computer has exactly the same standard default set up work group and it is simply called WORKGROUP. Something people are not even aware of and this actually is a security issue for computers.

Review: The Origin PC Eon11-S gamer laptop exploits intelligent graphics ...

The PSP is one of the most popular and state of the art handheld games consoles around, and now you want to Download Games for your PSP because buying them from the shops all the time is very costly. It is very easy to Download games you just need to know a few simple things.

Firstly you will need to find out which version of firmware you have, you'll need the earlier versions 1.0 or 1.5 the newer firmware 2.0 dose not let you play downloaded PSP games. You will also need the memory stick duo.

You then need to find a good site to download PSP games, there are a few different types and knowing which ones to use that are not a waste of time or money can also be tricky. My advice is to find a site that only charges a one time only membership fee (usually around the price of one game from the shops) which gives you access to unlimited downloads. There are other types of download site such as the totally free ones, which are supported by advertising, this means you'll get bombarded with advertising banners and pop-ups before you get to the download page, and these sites usually leave lots of malicious viruses on your computer. Then there are sites which charge monthly subscriptions and or pay per download fees, in my opinion these are just a waste of money.

Once you've chosen your site, you'll need to download the game on to your computer, making sure the file ends with .PSP, then you have to insert your memory stick duo. Then connect the PSP to your computer via the USB cable, then copy the games to your PSP making sure you place them in the 'PSP' 'GAMES' folder, if this folder dose not exist then you'll need to create one on the memory stick duo. Once you've done all that your ready to play your games.

A good site to download PSP games will have all the instructions and easy step by step guides to take you one step at a time through the whole process, and some good PSP sites have 24/7 customer support in case you get confused.

Answer by mattk3650
Although iMacs aren't the best for gaming, don't listen to the people who say Macs are useless. They have their advantages. I probably wouldn't consider them gaming machines, but Macs can do gaming if that's what you like. iMac 21.5" high-end is probably the best desktop. If you like bigger screens, in my opinion, the 27" would be a better option. Although desktops aren't that good, I think that the MacBook Pro 15.4" is possibly the best gaming laptop in general. As for gaming on PCs, Alienware M11x is a very good gaming laptop and at only 11" is extremely portable only $ 800. Very good for gaming with a massive 1 GB of dedicated video RAM, but a slow processor. It is also probably the only PC that compares to the "sexiness" of a Mac. As for desktops, you can easily buy a cheapo desktop and put a good video card in it.

The video explains why I choose the motherboard I did. The 1366 motherboard will work OK in any Micro ATX case that only has two expansion bays as opposed to three like mine. I need all my expansions bays but for most of you the 1366 might work out better. The 1366 version is an ass kicking motherboard but if you are on a tight budget the 1156 version can save you some cash. You might want a better power supply if you opt for the 1366 version. If you opt for a GTX series graphics card with either version you will need to invest in a better power supply. My system is a low voltage system as is.

aboutcomputer99.blogspot.com i7 Computer for video editing

So you've finally decided it's time for a change. No matter what advice you follow that old work horse of a desktop computer you have has outlived its usefulness with slow loading applications and a continuous rise in operation noise.

Searching for that Perfect Computer can be about as much fun as purchasing a new car and about as frustrating also when sorting through the various brands while trying to decide which "bells and whistles" best fit your needs. Besides all that trying to return something that is so large can be both inconvenient and very difficult to do. So making the right decision the FIRST time is the wise path of choice.

For starters you'll need to decide what you want to do with your computer. Are you into the video game scene or are you someone who likes to just surf the internet and occasionally do some book keeping with simple word processing software?

If you're into video games you're going to want a machine that can handle the high level of graphics and superior sound quality. On the other hand if you're not into all that high adrenalin stuff you can probably get by with a less expensive system. Although, if you want to stay on the safe side I would recommend going with something more "high-end" so you don't have to spend another large chunk of change to upgrade the system you just bought.

There are two basic routes you can take when purchasing a new computer.

1) Purchase a "Brand Name" Computer 2) Purchase a "Clone" Computer

A "BRAND-NAME" computer is one that is manufactured by a company that is recognizable by name.

Some Advantages/Disadvantages of "Brand-Name" computers include:

Advantages:

Customer Support- If you are experiencing problems with your computer you will have the option to contact a representative of the company that yo u purchased the PC from to get help in solving your problem.

Customer support is probably the best reason to buy a brand-name computer.

Warranty- Having a warranty is always nice since it acts as a type of security blanket for you.

In case a part on your computer should fail you should be able to get the item fixed at no charge just as long as the warranty has not expired.

Read and understand a company's warranty policy BEFORE you purchase a computer from them.

This way you'll have a good understanding of the procedures to follow in case a problem should arise.

Pre-installed Software- Many companies will include software packages that are all set up and ready to go for you on your computer.

Although, a disadvantage of buying a brand-name computer with software pre-installed is that you usually end up with more than fits your needs and usually just results with the wasting of space on your storage device.

Additional Support- Most brand-name computer companies are also able to provide you with web sites that may provide you with current software updates, user manuals, or basic troubleshooting help.

Disadvantages

The use of Proprietary parts- the term Proprietary refers to products that are unique to an individual company and that company only.

So if a part was to malfunction on your computer after warranty and you needed to replace it you could not just go to your local computer store and purchase any old part even if it was intended for the same function as the item that failed.

You would be forced to buy the exact same item that came out of the computer or else the computer would more than likely cease to function correctly.

Having to buy proprietary parts usually involves the need to place an order which means you'll have to wait for the part t o arrive or you'll have to send your computer into the company or an authorized dealer of that company for repairs.

People with a home based business would probably not be too happy with that situation at all.

Integrated/On-board parts- In the computer world when you hear the word integrated or on-board it means that a particular part such as the modem or sound port where you plug in your speakers, is built-in or part of the computer main board (Also known as the Motherboard).

This means that if any of these items should fail, you can't just remove them from the computer and replace them with a new part. They are usually soldered directly to the main board and are stuck there.

Although, some computers do provide a way to disable a malfunctioning device which will allow you to install your own store bought device to take the place of the broken part.

From a computer technicians poin t of view this is not always easy to do.

It just depends on what brand of computer you currently have. Meaning some are easier to work on than others.

A "CLONE" computer is a clone or a copy of its brand-name counterpart with the exception that instead of company specific or proprietary parts, the items used to make a clone computer are from several different companies instead of only one.

Let's say that if you were to go to a local company that builds "clone" computers, and you tell them what you need, chances are they don't use parts that are specific to only that type of computer like the brand-name computer companies do.

This is a good thing because it means that they will probably use components that are interchangeable with many different brands and are easy to come by if needed.

Some Advantages/Disadvantages of "Clone" computers include:

Advantages:

Cost- compared to brand-name computers the clone will generally be easier on your pocket book when purchasing one with similar features as its brand-name counterpart.

This is most likely due to the money that is saved by not offering the high-end customer service. Although, that may not be the only reason for the lower prices.

Easily Accessible Replacement Parts- Since the clone computer was built with parts that are not any one company specific, you can buy parts for the clone computer that can be used even if the brand is different from the one that was in the computer when you originally bought it.

NOTE: Before you buy any parts, it is necessary to make sure that the replacement parts are compatible with your particular computers system requirements.

Either consult the manual that should have came with your computer or get help from a knowledgeable friend or repair person.

Disadvantages:

Warrant ies- Unless you purchase a service plan you will typically not have as an attractive warranty as you would with a brand-name computer company.

Whatever you do just make sure you understand how long the warranty is for and as to what kind of repairs the warranty covers before you make the purchase.

Customer Support- With brand-name computer companies you are usually provided with a 24-hour toll free number that you can call if you have questions or concerns with your computer.

Clone computers are more than likely not going to have a 24-hour help service, but rather you will be forced to only be able to call during regular business hours.

Also, it is more than likely that there will not be any one website that you can go to in order to find out information concerning troubleshooting questions you may have.

For service it may be necessary to take the computer back to the store that you bou ght it at or you may have to do some research on the individual parts that went into the computer and visit the manufacturer's website for troubleshooting tips.

Finally, if all else fails you can certainly take what you have learned from this article and being that you know what you need now, but don't know where to go and get that "Perfect Computer", the best resource at your disposal are the very men and woman that work at your local electronics shop.

It is their duty to help you get hold of that "Perfect Computer" that best fits your needs. All you need to do is tell them what you plan on using that computer for and they should be more than happy to help you from there.

Answer by QA Wizard
Colleges may or may not be interested. I'd look more at your look school district. Public education is always underfunded and usually looking for donated PCs. Most of them now have a computer guy who you can contact and who should know enough to evaluate your hardware and see if they can use it.

Answer by Thomas T
I load Ubuntu on them and install them at our local library. I just set up a 600 Mhz machine with Ubuntu, browses the web and they can listen with earphones to music just htis week. They were very appreciative. Our local school district would be able to find a use for them. Give them a call.
