In late july or early august, Asus is going to release a 199$ laptop computer. It has a 2G solid state flash drive and has a custom distro of Linux on it.

Watch the sales ads, but stay away from Acer, unless you have heard of a good experience with them. Generally they are cheap, but they have an extremely high return rate. In my opinion Dell has the best products, but they can be a little pricey & you have to order it. :-( I just recently bought a Compaq on sale at Best Buy for $ 499.99, and it works pretty well. Vista slows it down a little bit, but it does on any computer you get for cheap (low memory). Just watch the sales ads in your area, stay away from Mail in Rebates, they can be tricky. I know that Compaq is a good way to go, HP is okay and Gateway is good as well. All of these offer $ 500 notebooks, you just have to choose which one you want and wait for it to go on sale. Beware of non namebrand, namebrands are well known for a reason!!! Good luck!
