What theradioham said. There is a small battery build onto the motherboard. Also modern desktop pcs never lose power completely until you unplug them. The motherboard still has low voltage power.

There's actually a little battery in desktops, too. It's a little nickel-sized watch battery, and has been there since about the PC XT or PC AT, back in the mid '80's, when the designers realized it was a nuisance to have to type in the date and time every time the machine was booted.
