If you are interested in recycling your old computers then you have two options depending upon the age of your computer gear.
Donating to a Computer Recycling Centre
Computers that are less than 5 years old can generally be donated to computer recycling centres where they are refurbished and donated or sold (at a nominal price) to those who usually could not afford a new computer. If you do not know where to find a local donation point your council should be able to provide you with locations that are in your immediate area.
If your computer is older, or not working then again there are registered recyclers who accept computers for recycling. These companies generally will break computers down into their components and sell or use the parts such as plastics, glass, metals, and circuit boards for new products.
The production and manufacture of computers uses large amounts of fossil fuels, and they contain toxic chemicals as well as parts t hat are non-biodegradable. Computer components can contain lead, cadmium or mercury, all dangerous chemicals that are harmful to the environment if not disposed of correctly.
By using safe methods of computer disposal, small business and individuals can save resources as well as saving on landfill.
Before donating or deciding to recycle your old computers it is important to safely delete all your personal files from the hard drives. If you are not sure what files to delete or how to make sure your data cannot be later retrieved, check out the following article.
