what your referring to is the CMOS battery its a separate power source on your pc. to answer your question, no, if its dead it must be replaced.

Nope ... CMOS batteries are not rechargeable ... if it's just a pop in one (some early batteries were soldered to the motherboard) ... but if it's a pop in round one go buy one for $ 3 and replace it number you want is a 2032

Not really. It does not get chanrged while the computer is on. However the use of battery is no longer needed while the computer has a power supply. The battery is required to store things like the BIOS code and the clock time and settings like passwords for BIOS. Thus, it is used when the computer is OFF. And so it has a very long life.

You need to replace it but be very careful when you do because if you break the clip that holds it in place, the whole computer is useless.

you can replace them, just take the battery out and take it with you to a general store or a watch shop. i got a replacement for mine at a watch shop! BTW, a dead Cmos battery wouldnt cause the problem your describing. a dead Cmos battery would cause the following: a error warning on bootup to indicate that the bio's has changed, or the time is inaccurate. this is all that would happen, you might have some other problems on your hands.
