A computer is a programmable device that performs mathematical calculations and logical operations which can process, store and retrieve large amount of data quickly. These computers are available in different types and sizes. Two types of computers are,

• Portable,• Desktop.

The computer components are power supply, hard disk drives, CD ROM and floppy drives, monitor, keyboard, mouse and motherboard. The motherboard consists of microprocessor, memory and drive controllers. It is one of the core components of computer and has the support for video, sound and networking cards.

The mother board also consists of various computer components such as Central Processing Unit (CPU), chipset, Random Access Memory (RAM), BIOS (Basic Input Output System) and internal buses. Power supply component includes power cord, switch and cooling fan. The main job is that it converts alternating current into direct current and provides different voltages to the differe nt parts of computer.

Video display controller is one of the important computer components. It produces the output for the computer monitor and is built either inside the motherboard or inside the PCI, AGP in the form of a graphics card. The various computer components are also used for computer storage. It includes Compact Disc (CD), Digital Versatile Disc (DVD), floppy disk, USB drive etc.

Another component of computer is sound card. It enables the computer to output the sound to audio devices and accepts input from a microphone. Monitor act as a component of computer which has screen size and screen type. The screen type is divided into CRT and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). The screen size depends on each computer.

CPU is the brain of the computer and it processes everything from basic to complex functions. RAM is a hardware which is used to store and process the data. Speakers are also one of the components of computer. It produces sound, music, voice b ased on the data created and it is sent by the sound card.

Safe mode disables all drivers that you installed, and uses safe versions shipped by Microsoft. Safe mode with networking disables everything except your network drivers. When your computer freezes during startup, you can edit the boot.ini file on your boot partition, and add the "/sos" parameter. This will show you the name of the drivers on your display when they are loaded. When your computer freezes _before_ logon, you can restore the last known good configuration and you will end up with the state before you make a critical change When your computer freezes _after_ logon, but before all programs are loaded, you can try to hold the shift key to skip some startup programs that might cause your computer to freeze. You can elliminate these by using the Microsoft's MSCONFIG tool (Start --> Run --> MSCONFIG --> OK) When your computer freezes at random intervals during normal usage, you might want to turn memory checking in the BIOS on, and check if you got the latest video drivers installed.
