They take in broken computers and sell them as parts.You can buy old computers really cheap. But most of them someone has accicdenlty blanked their hard drive. I can fix it. unfortunetly the only people you would be able to sell them to are inexperienced people who need one. they wont know how to use ubuntu or any linux distribution. Your best bet is to pirate windows xp and put it on the computers. not that im suggesting that (wink wink). personally, I think its a lost cause. I doubt any one will want to buy a used machine thats got damn old parts in them

You will have to make sure that all the hardware inside the computer will be able to run sophisticated running programs. E.g. if there is enough RAM. Cause my friend tryed to do that and has computer wasn't up to spec and it runs incredibly slow.

A machine with a Pentium 4 with a minimum of 512mb RAM is still worth having so there are possibilties. Anything earlier than that you would be struggling. You can, but the question is will people trust you enough to buy them. The other thing to consider is that these machines will have to run fast. You can't buy a Windows 98 computer, for example, and load linux on it. No matter what distribution you install, it will run slow.

I agree with Beryl and Piratsm....you will need comps with a p-4 processor preferable a 1 gig min and at least 512k ram or it will be so slow no one will want it. I am running Linux Mint 8 in an old Dell P-3 866 mhz with 512 ram and its slow. The processor is the hold up. I have tried the lightweight distros with not much help. Slitaz seems to run fast enough...but its not my cup of tea..
