My Media Centre case is a X-Media 2S case with 7" touchscreen (www.mediacenter-tv.co.uk that I run with FrontView. But I have configured it to switch the Vista MediaCenter from the TV to the 7" display with just one button on the remote. This is very handy as I don't always want to put the TV on just to listen to music, so I hit the blue button on my remote and it switches the mediacenter to the X-Media PC, and then I use my remote to browse to the music I want and play it! I can also put a slideshow of my photos on at the same time to have a photo-frame. I set-up the button switch with Imon software that comes with the X-Media case. MediaVue www.mediacenter-tv.co.uk

"It looks like someone knew what they came in for, especially that they took computer monitors, CPUs and an official laptop, all which were in daily use," MISA Botswana director, Phenyo Butale said yesterday. He wondered why the thieves opted to take ... MISA burglary raises eyebrows

Your PC is incomplete without a monitor. A computer monitor is required for all desktop PCs, to see the characters and images processed by the computer using the graphic card.

Computer monitors are designed according to the display standards laid down by the industry. Occasionally these are called heads, when referring to several monitors used to display data using only one computer. Generally, the cathode ray tubes used for display screens are rectangular in shape, but circular and square screens are also popular

Present-day computers use a cathode-ray tube to display characters. This tube is made of glass and connected to a flat screen on one end, tapering to a narrow end on the other. A single electron gun is connected to the narrow end of the tube for a single-color monitor whereas three electron guns are required for multicolor monitors. The monitor emits light when the electrons strike the screen.

Although computers have become an integral part of our lives, using these machines for a long period of time can cause visual problems and headaches. The glare on the computer screen can strain the user's eyesight, especially when trying to read small characters on the monitor.

Call an expert immediately if your screen is flickering noticeably, and adjust the contrast balance between the text and the background. Eye specialists advise you take regular breaks from your work, and try focusing your tired eyes at an object twenty feet away from your work station.

Keep your computer monitor clean using a mild cleaner, and wipe it using a lint-free cloth. Close your eyes whenever you are tired, and don't hesitate to use eye drops to soothe your dry eyes.

If your goal is to make it as visually-appealing as possible, you're going to need to use a graphics program like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP (Gimp is free for download at http://www.gimp.org). These programs do have a bit of a learning curve, but they'll provide the best looking results. If you have experience with Excel, you can create very accurate charts with limited graphics. Videotape editing on a computer is tons of fun, once you know how.

Using video editing software can transform you and your video into creative visual story-telling wonders. Editing video is quick, exciting and fairly cheap.

Unfortunately, the steep learning curve of most video editing software programs intimidates lots of folks and they give up in frustration.

I'm here to help...stick with it! Once you know the basics, frustration will be replaced by self-satisfaction and you'll be having more fun than pig in mud.

As a lifelong professional video producer, I think the biggest thing that confuses people when they first open any video editing software is the window-laden interface. No other computer program genre packs as much onto the screen as video editing.

Window Movie Makers is a basic program with a relatively universal interface. In other words, virtually all video editing programs share WMM's basic on-screen layout.

As y ou examine the Movie Maker screen, you can see that there are four open windows and they all have separate functions. Additional windows can be called up in WMM, but not all at once.

Some windows can be hidden and something else will display. In all, a computer video editing program can have anywhere from eight to about twenty different windows. No wonder people get confused! What the heck is all this stuff?

(See the very bottom of this article for an explanation about why there are so many windows.)

When you divide the screen shown in the picture above into two sections horizontally, the top half contains three windows and the bottom half is one large window. Here is a list of all four.

TIMELINE: This is the bottom half, horizontal, turquoise section.

TASK PANE: Upper left section of the top half.

COLLECTIONS: Middle window on top half

OUTPUT: Far right on top half of screen.

Let's start with the timeline, which ta kes up the entire bottom half of your screen in Windows Movie Maker.

The timeline window is universal to all video editing programs. The timeline is where you build your movie. The timeline is a visual representation of your story. You can see which clips you have put where. Also, you can see a waveform representation (the squiggly line inside the white) of your audio. Across the top is a running time.

In WMM, your timeline has one line for standard video, one for video effects/transitions, one line for titles, and two lines for audio. They are labeled on the far left of the screen and the thin, black lines running horizontally separate them.

More sophisticated programs have more lines available for video and audio. Some have an infinite number, but that's overkill in my opinion. I've never gone over twenty-five lines and that was an enormous headache!

You use multiple lines to mix together multiple sources of video or audio. For simple prod uctions, you won't need any more than WMM gives you. If you want to get fancier, you'll have to look at a more expensive program.

Looking at the top half of your screen, you see three open windows in the picture above. The first one on the left is the "task pane." The task pane lists such tasks as importing video or audio. You also have a list called "Edit Movie" which brings up different windows or functions. Next, is a set of links that bring up functions for saving your movie to your hard drive or a disc. Lastly, the task pane has links to tips on how to edit. You can turn the task pane on/off in the "view" pull down menu located across the top.

(Like ALL computer programs, video editing has a pull down menu tool bar across the top. In WMM, they include: file, edit, view, tools, clip, play and help.)

The middle window in the top half of your screen shows either "collections" "effects" or "transitions." This is your viewer window. The shot ab ove shows four clips in the collections window and they are displayed as thumbnails.

"Collections" is the name given for all the media you have collected within your projects. Every clip of video, every audio clip and every still picture. If you click the small field in the middle you can switch between the three options.

The blue symbols represent different video transition effects you can click and drag down into your timeline.

The window on the far right is called the output monitor window. This is where you watch your edited movie. The output monitor shows you what is in your timeline and is very much like a mini-TV.

In fact, in order to get a better understanding of WHY there are so many windows in a video editing program, it helps to know just a bit about the history of editing videotape.

Before computers, it took about one million dollars of separate components to edit video using motion effects and graphics. A well-stocked edit room had dozens of pieces of equipment.

Today, one computer using a simple program like Windows Movie Maker can do what it took all those separate pieces to do. Each component translates into a different window on your computer screen.

Once you become familiar with all the different windows and what they do, editing videotape in a computer will make a lot more sense.

When you say compact computers you are talking about desktop computers I take it? Anyways The compact always have one issue that the bigger computers do not have. That issue lies with the hardware. In the compact computers there is always a limited amout of space ion it, same with the bigger pc. But with the compact, the amount of space is limited more than the bigger ones. So in that case you might run into the problem of running out of space.

I demonstrate how to test RAM in your computer using MemTest 86. It is a free download that you can find easily with a google search for Memtest 86. Once you go through and burn the Memtest 86 ISO to a CD you can place it in a computer and boot up from it. Let it run for an hour, or at least 5 passes and it should give you a good idea if your memory is working correctly or not. For more check out www.thenoc.tv

aboutcomputer99.blogspot.com How to test RAM with Memtest 86

In this article, which is going to get quite technical for you non techies, we're going to debate the issue of whether or not RAM latency matters when choosing memory for your computer. My apologies in advance if some of this stuff seems like it's out in the stars.

When people consider system memory, it is unfortunately an afterthought, next to the rest of the stuff you find in your computer. Many people who build PCs (and you know who you are) just put in whatever they can find as long as it works in "their" systems. Some builders however, take the opposite route and get these mega bucks ultra high frequency or low latency chips in the hopes that it will give their systems a big boost in performance. Don't worry, you pay for this bit of overkill.

It has gotten to the point that many major manufacturers offer special low latency memory. Kingston, one of the biggest manufacturers of computer memory chips, has their own low latency line called the HyperX DDR400 RAM. Pretty fancy name, wouldn't you say? Then you've got Crucial peddling their own low latency line they call Ballistix. Then there is OCZ Technologies which has actually sold low latency RAM chips for a very long time. And for the company Corsair, their XMS memory line boasts an "LL" designation for their low latency chips.

As I said, you pay for these little gems, to the tune of 30 to 100% more than for ordinary memory chips. But the big question is, are they worth the big bucks that you're shelling out for them? Well, fortunately there are testing companies out there that help us answer these kind of questions and tests were made on these low latency chips versus your ordinary run of the mill RAM chip.

To explain low latency first, in a brief and simple way, every chip you buy comes with what is called a clock rate, or how fast the chip will perform operations in your computer. Low latency means that the chip will actually run faster than this clock rate without having to overclock it because of the ultra high frequency the chips run on. So your computer runs faster. The question is, how much faster and does it make a noticeable enough difference in performance to justify the cost?

Without getting super technical here, when tests were conducted on various high end systems, which is where you need your highest performance boost, the improvements with low latency RAM chips came out to a meager 1% improvement in speed over regular RAM chips for the cheapest of the low latency chips and only a 3% improvement in speed over regular RAM chips for the most expensive. These tests were conducted on numerous high end systems with similar results for all.

Numbers don't lie, but you can draw your own conclusions from these tests. However, it is quite obvious from these results you're probably not getting what you paid for when buying these high end chips. You might want to save your money and invest in a bette r motherboard.

Question by natureluv047@verizon.net: Ran a memory test. If a pseduo random address test fails, does that mean the computer memory can cause errors? Best answer for Ran a memory test. If a pseduo random address test fails, does that mean the computer memory can cause errors?:

Answer by davedave01
yes, and your operating system can eventually become corrupted from the bad data. while it's true that synthetic tests are much more demanding than everyday use, any computer running properly should be able to pass those tests 100% of the time. if you're checking the stability of an overclock, i'd recommend upping your memory's voltage a bit or backing off on the OC, depending on your circumstances.

Answer by moginspace
Sounds like your memory (RAM) has gone bad. If this is your problem your computer will probably continue to function but you will get increasingly more errors as you use it. The memory receives one value then writes back another value and the problem just escalates and pretty soon your computer is randomly rebooting and programs and windows are crashing for no apparent reason. If bad memory is indeed your problem you HAVE TO buy new ram. Newegg.com has decent ram at good prices. Crucial.com can help you find out what kind of ram your computer needs. However I'd run a few more memory tests before you conclude you have bad memory.

aboutcomputer99.blogspot.com Genesi launches new cheaper/better i.MX53 based Laptops and Desktops

The decision to buy a computer is easy to make if there is really the need for it. Many models with the latest features are out in the market and all these promise the best PC experience. With enough information, it's not difficult to find one that suits its purpose.

However, there are two types of PCs: laptops and desktops. Making a choice between the two can take time if one is not privy to the unique characteristics of each. The advertising that it gets can just blur the facts necessary for settling with decision. These tend to focus more on how it appears as if it is a fashion item.

Of course, its appearance has a bearing on one's preference but it is certainly not the main feature of a PC. If aesthetics are the basis, then laptops will certainly be the hands-down choice. Most models are sleek-looking and lightweight. Some even have colors that could match designer clothes.

Desktops, on the other hand, do not need to appear fashionable. What is im portant for these is power and durability. Lately, however, CPU casings have been made slimmer and monitors are using the LCD, which laptops use for display. The enhancements have made it look better on any table and lessen the space required in a house.

An obvious advantage that laptops have over desktops is its portability. This is one reason why laptops are the choice of many people whose jobs require them to be on the go always. Currently, laptops have even been made smaller and lighter that students who want to make life in the classroom more convenient it.

However, its advantage can be its own undoing if a laptop owner is not careful. Unlike a desktop PC, it can be easily stolen, along with the valuable data in it, and sold again in the black market. There have been security improvements such as thumbprint and voice recognition but these can still be hacked with a little effort.

With its weight and the peripherals attached to it, a desktop is certainl y not designed for mobility. However, for power users it is the most recommended. In terms of graphics and audio, it has better capabilities. For graphic designers and gamers, this is the obvious choice. Jobs that require PCs to run for long hours definitely prefer desktops too.

Therefore, the best way of deciding which to have is to consider its particular usage. If mobility is not required, one may just settle with the less expensive desktop. However, if one needs to use his PC often even when he is away from home or the office, then a laptop is recommended.
